I never met Ellen Pittman. I've corresponded with people who saw her riding and met her. I've heard stories about her "riding down TN 153 doing 45 on that little scooter in 30 degree weather with trucks displaying huge Harley banners in the back windows blowing past her as if they didn't care." And "this brave soul who no matter what the risk, rode that scooter everywhere she went -to the store, to work, riding in the worst weather amongst the worst drivers."Traffic investigators with the Chattanooga Police Department have confirmed that a woman seriously injured in an accident Friday evening has died as a result of her injuries. Ellen Pitman, 51, was critically injured after she was hit on her motor-scooter in the 3800 block of Brainerd Road.
Ms. Pitman was traveling west on Brainerd Road when a vehicle driven by Warnesta Robinson turned in front of her onto Talley Road. Ms. Pitman was transported to Erlanger Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries just before noon Monday.
Ms. Pitman often could be seen riding for a number of years riding her pink scooter and wearing a pink helmet.
Robinson was charged with failure to yield the right of way and violation of the insurance law.
There's all sorts of bitterness between riders of different brands and styles of bikes; who's a "real" biker and who's a poseur.
Ellen Pittman died the way many of us who ride will, doing what she loved. She's more of a "real" biker than many I've met.
Godspeed.
