Hearts of Space Transmissions

Post by Menolly »

I figure I'll start a thread for the program notes of the Hearts of Space transmissions, since the posts are so long and people can choose to read them instead of being forced to scroll through them in the What are you listening to? thread.

My local NPR station starts the weekly transmissions on Sundays at 10:00 pm EDT. Here's wuft-fm's site. You can stream the program there each week.

Tonight's first transmission was awesome...
INTRO: Dreamy — twangy — timeless — and deep. Yes, spacefans, it's another installment of our long running love affair with the spatially expanded, dematerialized version of the electric guitar.

Long ago and far away — back in 1985 to be precise — we began a series of programs focused on the reinvention of the dominant popular instrument of our time: the electric, and now electronic guitar.

Let's review: LEO FENDER electrified it in the 1950s, which begat R&B and rock. JIMI HENDRIX and others propelled it into high orbit in the 1960s (emphasis on high). And it was launched into space in the 1970s and '80s, when digital special effects became accessible to ordinary mortals.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts of Space, a journey into the infinite echoes of SPACE GUITARS 6.

The second transmission is playing now...
INTRO: That's SMADJ...out of Tunisia by way of Paris. He brings together the venerable oud and the sultry rhythms of North Africa with the latest electronic sounds.

Today the mediasphere is alive with a new kind of "world music." The old masters of the great ethnic music traditions have a global audience, while DJ's sample beats and create new world mixes for the intelligent dance floor. Almost any musician can have their own studio and release their music worldwide online — with photos, video and text — on giant sites like MySpace and Facebook.

The successful ones travel, perform, and build worldwide networks of collaborators and audience. The Internet ties it all together. For these musicians, even in the midst of all the political struggles of today — it really is a new world.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective edition of Hearts of Space, a journey in the Middle Eastern electronic fusion zone called EQUILIBRIUM.

I missed the start of the program myself, so I'm guessing which program this first transmission is. If I'm wrong when they repeat it at the end, I'll edit.
INTRO: There's some kind of magic in the unlikely combination of Medieval Latin chants, electronics and sultry female vocals.

Invented by VANGELIS in 1975, it's a sound that caught a huge wave back in 1990 when ENIGMA added dance beats to the mix. Thanks to Romanian mastermind MICHAEL CRETU, it's not only remembered fondly today, it's still evolving in the work of Cretu, as well as other musicians and producers.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we revisit the ethereal beats at the intersection of electronic chill, atmospheric dance, Flamenco and sacred chant...on a program called SACRED AND PROFANE.

And now comes the second transmission...
INTRO: The musical panorama connecting the electronic rhythms of our hyperactive culture to the nourishing waves of contemplative space is long, but always worth the journey. Along the way, the slowing tempo reveals new perspectives at every vista. And at the destination, subtle worlds of infinite dimension and unpredictable insight await.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we flow with the electronic rhythms and sonic currents...on a journey to the threshold of silence called DYNAMIC STILLNESS.

And tonight's second transmission:
INTRO: The drone...the modal scale...the sinuous, ornamented melodic line. Even without a sitar or a tabla, you know you're enveloped in one of the new Indian influenced strains of ambient music.

Hundreds of years ago, while Western music turned right at polyphony, harmony, and the equal-tempered scale, Indian classical music continued to develop the old modal system of scales and natural intervals in a vocal-centered, monophonic style.

Where we created chords and counterpoint, monumental symphonies, hymns and songs, Indian music continued to evolve the melodic sophistication of raga, the rhythmic complexity of tala, and the patient pursuit of mood and depth.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we return to the sublime world of Indian ambient and devotional music...on a program called INDIA EVOLUTION.

A reminder for those interested that tonight's two hour transmission of Hearts of Space can be streamed here, starting at 10:00 PM EDT/8:00 PM PDT.

First transmission:
INTRO: Emerging out of the desert like a prayer, rising with the sun and swaying off across the sand — the ecstatic, melismatic call at the heart of Middle Eastern music. It's a musical experience we return to time and again for its exotic ambience and emotional rewards.

Long before the turmoil of today, the Middle East sat at the crossroads of ancient civilization, and its music records a history of shared influences from North Africa, Egypt, Persia, Turkey, Greece, and the 600-year Moorish occupation of medieval Spain, the storied Al-Andalus.

Today our crossroads are urban and digital, and musicians from all over the world gather in studios, on stages, and online to combine elements of electronic, folk, classical and world music into an evolving super-cultural mix — respectful of history and tradition, bridging cultural barriers, and taking a step into the future.

A reminder for anyone interested...

Sundays, from midnight to midnight PDT (I think) is when anyone can go to hos.com, create an account or log in to one already created, and listen to the current transmission for free.

Here is this week's transmission playlist on hos.com:
PGM 844: "AMERICAN CROSSROADS"

PGM NOTE: music for changing times

FIRST BROADCAST: 4-Jul-2008

INTRO: Every July 4th, we celebrate America's independence with food, fun, and fireworks. For as long as most of us can remember, everything that's good about America — our diversity, freedom, individuality and self-assurance — has been proudly on display.

This year, our celebration is tempered by a growing awareness of the great challenges we face in national, global and even planetary affairs. You have to look back to the 1930s to find a comparable period, but even those challenges seem limited by comparison.

So this year we celebrate the founding of America with the knowledge that American ideals and the American character are being tested. If Americans can respond positively to the challenges we face, we may look back on this period as the time of America's maturity.

American music today reflects the maturing of our melting-pot of cultural traditions — hymns, folk and popular songs, blues, jazz, electronica, maverick classical, ethnic rhythms, and immigrant genres — a complex panorama of musical sources, freely invented and reinvented. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we listen for the reflective side of the American soundscape...on a program called AMERICAN CROSSROADS.

Tonight's two hour stream has started.

First up:
INTRO : Summer brings us one of the greatest free shows on earth. In fair weather, rising water vapor freezes into microcrystals of ice, and we see a vast, constantly changing panorama of clouds, floating and flying overhead. When summer storms arrive, the sky grows dark with the drama of thunder and lightning — nature's original multimedia show.

Clouds come in four families: high, middle, low, and vertical — with official Latin names like cirrus, cumulus and stratus. Satellites now give us the big picture of cloud patterns around the planet and how they affect the weather; there are even clouds on other planets, and interstellar clouds in outer space. It's no wonder that ambient musicians find clouds a major inspiration.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a high altitude summer electronic journey called CLOUDSCAPES.

And the second transmission tonight:
INTRO: Summer...opens our ears to the sounds of warm weather cultures, where music is still in touch with the rhythms of the natural world. Along with the weather, the body stirs and wants to move to sultry beats, or drift in the ethereal atmosphere of the tropics.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, sounds of nature and music that floats through your world, as we turn the corner into summer on a program called FLOATING GARDENS.

A reminder for anyone interested...

Sundays, from midnight to midnight PDT (I think) is when anyone can go to hos.com, create an account or log in to one already created, and listen to the current transmission for free.

Here is this week's transmission playlist on hos.com:
INTRO: When the history of North Indian music in the 20th and 21st centuries is written, one of the giants of the story will be ALI AKBAR KHAN, who passed away at his home here in Northern California on June 18th, 2009, at the age of 87.

By any measure Khansahib, as he was called by his thousands of students and admirers, was an extraordinary musician who led an extraordinary life. On this special transmission of Hearts of Space, we celebrate his life, his playing, and his enormous contribution to contemporary music.

It was ALI AKBAR KHAN and his fellow student RAVI SHANKAR, with the help of violinist YEHUDI MENUHIN, who truly brought Indian classical music to the west beginning in 1955. Menuhin called him "an absolute genius...perhaps the greatest musician in the world."

ALI AKBAR KHAN was born in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) in 1922. At the time, his father ALLAUDIN KHAN was already a major figure in Indian music, and was established as the chief musician at the court of the Maharaja of Maihar in central India. It was here that Ali Akbar Khan grew up and became his father's student.

Hindustani music originated in Vedic times over 3000 years ago and was originally based on the singing of sacred texts. This legacy gave North Indian classical music a serious, devotional quality, but eventually the full range of emotional experiences were incorporated into the music.

In Indian music, the system of ragas or "seed compositions" on which the player improvises, has developed over many generations of oral transmission. Raga is the basis of both performance practice and the teaching tradition embodied in the musical guru/disciple relationship. Ali Akbar Khan received this tradition from his father and passed it on to generations of students during a lifetime of teaching, concertizing and composing.

His father Allaudin Khan, who lived to be 110(!) and is said to have played over 200 instruments, decided that young Ali Akbar would concentrate on just one: the sarode, a fretless Indian instrument in the lute family descended from the Persian rebab, with 25 strings — 4 main strings for melody, 6 for rhythm, and 15 drone or sympathetic strings for harmonics and ambience. The instrument is made of teak, with a goatskin diaphragm stretched over a resonator, and a polished metal fingerboard. With his sarode, his tradition, and the power of his teaching, Ali Akbar Khan moved...the world of music.

While each raga is designed for a specific time of day, on this program we feature selections from several ragas from Ali Akbar Khan's dozens of recordings: a Morning Meditation from the album JOURNEY; two alap movements or slow introductions — Rag Shri from ALI ALKBAR KHAN PLAYS ALAP, and the alap from Raga Gauri Manjari; and the most famous of his original compositions, Raga Chandranandan from SIGNATURE SERIES, Volume 1. Finally, the evening raga Darbari Kanra, from the album GARDEN of DREAMS. In tone, technique, phrasing, mood and depth, you'll hear the work of a master musician at his peak.

A tribute to ALI AKBAR KHAN...on this edition...of Hearts of Space.

Running late tonight, so I missed the title of tonight's second transmission. However, it is streaming right now on the wuftfm.org site. I'll post the play list as soon as I know what show it is.

So far, it seems the style I enjoy the most. Sort of trance...

...hmmm.
No second transmission tonight, and the first show was the current week's program. Very unsusual for WUFT-FM.
Anyway, here is what was played. It can still be played for free until midnight PDT tonight on hos.com once you sign up for a free account .
INTRO: The desert...a place where sun, heat, wind and sand conspire to make life a challenge for even the strongest organisms.

For humans, it's where civilization ends, and we confront the earth at its most elemental — vast space, rugged terrain, extreme conditions, contemplative solitude, and often, eerie silence. It's no wonder the desert continues to be a major source of inspiration for ambient musicians.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another superheated journey in dehydrated spaces called DESERT REALMS.

This week's transmission via the hos.com stream. The stream is available for free all day Sunday until midnight PDT. Sign up for a free account, log in, and enjoy.

If the transmission via wuft-fm's site tonight is different, I'll post that playlist at that time, as well as the link again.
INTRO: The music of the vast African continent is many-faceted and influential. Our colleagues at the public radio program AFROPOP have built a 20-year series around it. For Hearts of Space, the search for African sounds is a bit of a challenge — by far the largest proportion is infectious dance music with a joy-per-minute index that's off the charts.

Yet along with the dancing and celebration, we find moving ballads, lullabies, ambient and contemplative pieces, especially in the West African countries of Mali and Senegal. It's a rhythmic, soulful sound, featuring melodic percussion instruments like the mbira and the balafon, and the West African harp called the kora.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another journey into the quiet rhythms of the African soundscape called AFRICAN HEARTBEAT.

INTRO: The power of music to create mental travelogues is one of its most distinctive qualities. But if you just listen to the instruments and the notes, you miss the proverbial forest for the trees. You have to let it take you away.

The "magic carpet" of biblical myth had a similar power: floating on air, it could take you anywhere. On this program, the art of travel by sound: we'll follow a path through a series of sonic worlds, flying to a place of rare beauty and deep feeling.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey on waves of sound called MAGIC CARPET

Streaming now until midnight Pacific Daylight Time at Hearts of Space...
This is an oldie but really good one from 2000.
INTRO: If the synthesizer freed composers to create new sounds, and the electronic studio enabled them to create new sound images — then the equivalent liberation for singers would be to abandon words — and create a language of pure sound.

These are what vocalist LISA GERRARD calls shapes: improvised, but precisely felt sounds that meet the emotional demands of the music — but are free from the restrictions of words.

But language has been called no less than "the defining characteristic of human civilization," "the one prime mover of human evolution — technology and social achievements."

Yet the tradition of singing without words has a long history. It extends deep into ancient cultures, moves though folk, sacred and choral music, and has been reinvented today by jazz and avant garde singers — and a new generation of vocalists, searching for a broadly inclusive spirituality in their music — a non-verbal language of the soul.

On this 25th Anniversary retrospective transmission of Hearts of Space, a program called SONGS WITHOUT WORDS.
