Khalida Mufarrij wrote:
Montefiore wrote:"However, please be my guest, my dear. I would like to show you my lovely asylum - the interior, that is - if you would be so kind to indulge an old man his few pleasures. No doubt I can indulge you in other ways."
"Lead on, McDuff," Khalida replies, winking at her purposeful vernacular misquote of the line from Macbeth as she falls in step next to the doctor and passes through the gate on to the asylum's grounds.
Doctor Montefiore escorted Khalida across the grounds between the gate and the asylum itself. The ground was dry, the grass withered and pale. The trees standing beside the fortress-turned-mental institution were like black withered arms rising futilely against the grey stone walls and silent windows. Cobwebs covered the dead branches and most of the windows - white ghostly veils waving in the sighing of the soft wind.

The doctor finished his glass of red fluid and then smiled as he pulled out an old key from one of his pockets. The two vampires were standing in front of thick metal door, beneath a faded sign that read 'Riverview'. He placed the key in a lock, turned it - there was a muted mechanical click - and opened the door. It was silent as it turned on its hinges. The vampiric psychiatrist stepped into the looming doorway, brushing a cobweb aside, and then turned to face his companion gesturing inside. Through the doorway Khalida could see a wide room with several rows of metal seats. The seats were also facing an enclosed office, with metal grating covering a wide opening in the grey wall. A figure was seated behind the window, reading a book under a flickering yellow lamp. She was the only person in the room. To the right of the window was an elevator door. To its left a short passage to a flight of stairs.

"Please enter, dear lady," the doctor said with a smooth voice. "And be welcome to the one of the most esteemed mental institution on the east coast."

A slight shiver ran up Khalida's spine as she stepped across the threshold into the sterile reception area. A decorator's touch might be welcomed by any family visitors who come during the day, she thought silently to herself. A small smile of curiosity lit upon her face as she waited for Montefiore to close and relock the door behind her. I do hope the good doctor does not deem me mad after our discussion...

"I look forward to learning of and seeing your demesne with interest," she replied.

The air is sterile without any scent. The lamps emitted cold light, illuminating everything but setting the grey walls, polished checkered floors and steel furniture in a near-monotone colour. Doctor Montefiore walked towards the left door, towards the stairwell.

"This place is a centre of learning," he replied as he passed the window with its quiet occupant. "I have made great strides in understanding and curing psychotic illnesses. My work towards understanding and treating delusional and affective disorders has all been achieved within these walls. This demesnes, as you so word it, is nothing short of a bulwark upon which the fads and empty theories of the past and modern age falter. I hope not to sound too immodest, but you stand within a place of great importance.

"You should feel privileged, as I do."

They reached the stairwell. The stairs leading down into the basement, or the lower levels, were brightly lit, but large cobwebs covered the rails and choked the corners. A sign pointing to these stairs read 'Nanekisu', itself partially obscured in cobwebs. The stairs leading up were unidentified, but equally covered in webs.

The doctor ascended.

"I am humbled that you invited me within, and to your private office to consult with you," Khalida replied, as she followed the doctor up the stairs, doing her best to avoid any cobwebs as they ascended.

Doctor Montefiore led his guest up several flights of stairs, passing two floors. At each floor there was a barred door blocking passage to lengthy corridors. They stood before one now at the third floor. The doctor pressed a button near the door, which called forth a bored-looking guard holding a set of keys. the guard unlocked the gate and pulled it back to allow the two vampires to enter.

The passage stretched away into monotonous greyness. The fluorescent lights here had either their intensity deliberately reduced or there was simply not enough power on this floor. They were also covered in webs. To either side of the corridor were rows of heavy doors, each of which had a viewing panel covered in mesh. The doors were even numbered on the left side, odd numbered right.

"This passage turns to the right and back again, but my office is at its end," the doctor said. He raised a hand again and motioned down the corridor. "Follow me."

As they walked between the doors, he continued. "Level three houses the criminally insane. Such as Johann Du Pont, the serial rapist, and Linda Chales whom you may remember stabbed her colleagues to death one Christmas eve. I also have here old Timothy, the man who tortured his children for several months. He is without a doubt my favourite, not the least because of the nature of his psychosis.

"Each and everyone one has been diagnosed with a psychotic illness, and are chronically ill. Medication is the only way to treat them, and the dosage has to be very high. Well, I lie; medication is not the only way to deal with them. As I alluded to before, I have cured their psychoses through understanding what makes them insane. Each of them are united in experiencing auditory hallucinations and paranoid delusions of the most deranged and violent kind. Upon admission to Riverview, that changed."

Khalida and doctor Montefiore rounded a corner, facing an identical corridor. "Admittedly, there are limitations to my treatment," he said with a lecturing tone as he continued. "But I believe that I will have perfected my cure within a decade, or a century."

Doctor Montefiore stopped at door '42'. "Excuse me," he said as he unlocked the door, revealing a small barren chamber occupied by a small, thin man on a narrow bed. Like everything else in the asylum, it was clean and cold, lacking colour. Cobwebs occluded the caged window. Before Khalida could get a good look at the pale man, the doctor surged at him, picking him up with incredible strength and holding him against the wall opposite the bed. The patient did not struggle, and his eyes were glazed. The doctor bit into his neck and started to drink blood.

Khalida's hunger surged as she watched the doctor feed. She had yet to feed herself this morning and as she was unsure of Kindred societal expectations in a situation like this, she struggled to remain a silent observer.

Doctor Montefiore finished, throwing the patient down on to the bed and wiping his lips with a white handkerchief. There were spots of blood on the patient's clothing, but the neck was unmarked.

"Of course," the doctor said as he moved the door, "this is all very unethical. I would be the last to deny that. However, given I am a necessary part of their lives - without me how could they be cured? - it is essential that I be fed to continue therapy."

He closed the cell door and locked it, and then walked away. "Please keep up; my office is only a short distance away."

The corridor turned again, and the pair faced another lengthy hall lined with featureless grey doors and spiderwebs on the ceiling and in the corners. The air seemed to lack a scent, the light empty and grey.

The doctor's door was indeed at the end, with his name marked in bold letters beneath a barred window. He looked at his companion and grinned broadly, "Let us talk, my lady."

Awaiting to follow Montefiore in to his office, Khalida's mind was racing with the choices before her of where to begin. Unconsciously, she took a little comfort from twirling the key between her fingers, still refusing to trust releasing it from her grasp for fear of losing track of it.

First step is to see how he positions himself for our talk. Behind his desk with me seated in front of it? Chairs side-by-side or facing each other? She smiles as a thought swiftly flies by. Or the stereotypical coach for me with him sitting beside in a chair?

Returning the doctor's invitation with a gentle yet nervous smile, Khlalida watches the doctor open his office door, then quietly follows him in.

The doctor's office is a narrow room filled with thousands of books - many of them psychiatry and medicine journals, as well as occult books and encyclopedias in several languages. The books are neatly stacked, and having seen years of use. At the far end, opposite the door, is the doctor's desk - a small wooden piece of furniture with a simple arrangement of pens and notebooks. A leather-back chair sits behind it. To the right of the room is a couch - the sort Freud would have used - with a statue of some Greek god beside it. Two wooden chairs face the desk.

Doctor Montefiore closes the door behind his guest, and then walks to one of the chairs in front of the desk and sits down, motioning for Khalida to take a seat on the couch.

Raising a brow slightly in bemusement, Khalida settles herself gently on the edge of the couch, too wound up inside to relax in to its cushioned embrace.

"Before I begin, you have raised my curiosity regarding your cure for the criminally insane during our walk here, Doctor. Will you describe what the cure itself is while I pull my thoughts together on where to begin?"

Doctor Montefiore steeples his fingers and crosses his right leg over his left, looking at her through impenetrable sunglasses. He is silent for a moment.

"Now that would be giving away my secrets," he said finally with a smile on his face. "I need at least twenty years to continue conducting experiments before writing my study."

Seeking information (Intelligence + Expression): 1 success.

"However, I believe I can tell you some of it," the doctor continued, clearly enjoying the sound of his own voice. "Most of my patients have a psychosis, as opposed to mood disorders or personality disorders. Almost everyone on this floor is floridly psychotic - experiencing auditory hallucinations or paranoid delusions of some sort. Ever been to an asylum or psychiatric ward? They are not areas conducive for a relaxed mind. Noisy, dangerous, chaotic . . . these terms and more come to mind. Yet, what did you notice here?"

Doctor Montefiore continued speaking before Khalida opened her mouth, so absorbed by talking about his own research. "The whole asylum is dead quiet. My patients are clearly not actively psychotic. Why not? Well, I know they are no longer experiencing hallucinations, and their behaviour is near normal. But, why is that?

"The answer is simple. The veil between worlds has been strengthened here. I believe that these patients hear voices that others cannot hear, or become delusional, because they can perceive the Other World - the auditory hallucinations are therefore real and not in their imagination or whatever; its because of beings I call Meme-Resonant Entities. So, I have blocked off that world from ours by altering the barrier, the veil."

He leaned forward as though delivering a great secret, and his tone of voice altered - becoming deeper. "The veil's weave - the very fabric that separates the worlds - has been strengthened."

Khalida's mouth drops open slightly as she listens.

"How?"

Attempting to put a facade of polite interest back on her face, she tries again. "The weave of the veil between this world and the Other World has been strengthened here? How is that done?"

"The same way a piece of cloth is strengthened," the doctor said with a wide smile. "One takes normal cotton and as he or she weaves a piece of cloth, you add another material. In this case, I have included something more. Would you care to hazard a guess?"

His grin remained, and there was a hint of his fangs.

Something more?
To add something more to something as unsubstantial as the Veil between Worlds???

Khalida regards the doctor in puzzlement.

"It must be something you believe I have a chance of figuring out," she responds with mild frustration. "But the mere concept of an Other World is new to me," she continues, while brushing at a strand of cobweb that had clung to her suit. "The idea that there is something physica..." She stops, and slowly gazes at the fragile spider thread that clings to her hand. "...cal which could strengthen..."

Tearing her gaze away from her hand, she looks at the cobwebs covering nearly every surface within the asylum.

"This may sound like a total disconnect in subject, Doctor, but...
...are you short on cleaning staff?"

The doctor maintained his grin, staring at her through his sunglasses. "Why no, not at all. In fact, this facility is as clean as ever."

"Then does the asylum have a really bad mosquito problem?
...the little bloodsuckers...
And the addition of natural predators such as spiders is believed to be of help in solving the problem?"

Khalida leans forward with a gleam in her eyes.

"Or is there another reason for all of the cobwebs which are woven throughout the asylum?"

Flash of brilliance - 1xp.

The doctor rubbed his neck and then folded his arms across his chest. His head inclined slightly as he looked at her, the grin never leaving his face. "You will note that most webs are unoccupied by arachnids. But they are indeed woven into the fabric of reality, or the barrier between our world and the meme-resonant one."

"...ah!!!" Khalida expels with the breath she had no idea she was holding. "I admit I haven't the slightest idea how such would work, but it is fascinating in concept and design indeed...

"And it always keeps the Other World from intruding here? Would..." She takes a deep breath before plunging forward, "...would it possibly protect someone who thinks they may be stalked by spirits themselves, if they duplicated it in other locations?

"If I continue, I fear you may consider me among "the psychotic,"" she went on. "But after having spoken to Sammy earlier tonight, and then following the results of the research I mentioned earlier, I think coming to seek you out may have been the best spur of the moment decision I have yet made."

An eyebrow raised beyond the edge of the sunglasses. "Duplicated? I think not, and that is where that subject ends, dead Khalida. However, if one is being followed by these 'spirits' - please, use my term - then the asylum is indeed the place to be seek refuge. As long as you remain in the upper levels."
