Fantasy themes and films

Post by Skyweir »

On another board .. I was trying to think of fantasy movies I enjoy .. but I could only think of a few ..

I dont know why it is so hard to think of fantasy themes .. I think it takes a great deal of creativity to come up with them .. I think that any author that can invent a fantasy novel .. particularly a good one .. is verging on the truly brilliant .. for example SRD and Tolkien from the example below .. have not only written fantastic and creative works of fiction each .. but in essence they have created complete worlds .. with its own unique inhabitants .. and them with their own culture history and languages and their own unique faiths .. and a world with its diverse environment .. and climate .. jut totally awesome!!

I love fantasy .. good fantasy .. and am totally in awe of those who create works of this kind ..

Well anyway here are a few of the fantasy movies that I could think of that were great imo .. Harry Potter and LotR's are 2 obvious ones ..

Spiderman was another fantasy I liked .. and there I draw a blank ..

I agree with your sentiments about fantasy authors - works of fiction are based in a world that already exists, whereas fantasy involves creating entire worlds from scratch...something which is very difficult to do without sounding derivative (as so much mediocre fantasy does). Presumably that's why we often end up with the same generic template of elves, dragons etc.

But back on topic...er...I can't think of any even passable fantasy films to add to the ones above... I'll go away and think for a while...

The Chronicles of Narnia came out on a set of BBC videos. They were pretty good, so were the books!

For me the best Fantasy film has to be Legend, I just love that film. I wish that LOTR had been filmed in such a magical way.

Unless I'm mistaken, Legend stars a very youthful Tom Cruise, and i don't like it much... 8) Never mind, eh?

I suppose that there's a line between fantasy and mythology, but I really loved Jason and the Argonauts when it was made.(1966 I think) The special effects may seem hokey now, but were edgy then. Particularly when the Hydras' teeth were sown like seed and became the skeleton soldiers. pretty neat stuff.

Thanks for the warm welcome,Sky. Yes, a teenage looking Tom Cruise is indeed in Legend. I didn't care for it much, however.

Re: Legend .. mmm pity!!

.. I think I will still hire the video when I remember and check it out for myself .. anyway ..

any other fantasy movies out there?? There doesnt seem to be too much of this genre .. and it is such a pity coz I luvz fantasy reading ie: LotR's TCTC MN .. Harry Potter etc.. they are the best forms of escapism besides sci-fi .. just love 'em.

Sky, the DVD version is infinitely better than the video. The DVD has extra scenes, and it has the original soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith (much better than the Tangerine Dream soundtrack, IMHO). :)
The aura of rightness here was so powerful that he began to regret that he belonged in a world where health was impalpable, indefinite, discernable only by implication.
