Eels

Post by StevieG »

Hello dear Watchers!

I'm not a raving fanboy (I think), but I want to share with you some of the music and background of a band I like. I know of at least (at most?) one other Watcher who enjoys Eels music, and I thought it was time to bring them to your attention.

Mark Oliver Everett (aka E) is the driving force behind Eels, and he has a very interesting history, which influences his music and lyrics.

Short bio: Mark recorded 2 solo albums before recording his breakthrough Beautiful Freak in 1996. Now, I'm not totally sure of the timelines, but his father died at age 51 around this time (heart attack I think), and at the end of recording Beautiful Freak, his sister committed suicide. So, with the incredible success of Beautiful Freak came incredible sadness. Shortly after, his mother told him she had lung cancer. She died of this disease also. He was around 19 when he lost his entire family.

So within a short space of time, his entire family was dead. This was the focus of his next album Electro-shock Blues. He decided to write about his experiences - a way to face what had happened to him. I'm going to share this first song with you - it's from Electro-shock Blues. The album is a requiem of sorts to his sister and mother.

This song is probably the one that got me interested in their music, Last Stop: This Town.

Enjoy! Last Stop: This Town

I'll keep posting new songs (and feel free to do so, if you are an Eels fan :) ), and if it is only to amuse myself, well, that's fine! :D

I LOVE Eels!
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

His dad was also the guy who came up the with parallel worlds theory - something used a lot of the world of sci-fi, particularly Stargate SG-1.

E's book is good too.

Cool song, cool video. Love the carrot!
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries

Yeah, the carrot's a classic!

The Eels website has a little story of Electro-shock Blues done in cartoon style - it's short and quite interesting - Electro-shock Blues Story

This next song doesn't have a film clip because I don't think it was released as a single. It's also from Electro-shock Blues.

This is one of my favourites, a great tune. It passed me by for years until I dug out the album for a listen. I couldn't believe some of the songs I'd missed!

Hey hey!! Great to hear Stonemaybe! Mr E's Beautiful Blues is one of my favourites too. I remember reading somewhere (probably his book) that doing the film clip - the Road Trip one - was something he was forced into doing, and he hated every second of it.

This is the original - hmm, he doesn't look too happy about it on looking at it again! Mr E's Beautiful Blues

Daisies of the Galaxy would have to be the most popular album I reckon, it's probably my favourite too, but it's getting harder to choose between them these days.

Eels up inside ya
Findin an entrance where they can
Eels up inside ya
Findin an entrance where they can

Boring through your mind, through your tummy, through your anus, eels!

Eels!

Eels (x14)

Give it up now!

Eels!

Eels, eels, give it up now!
Eels, eels, give it up now!

I was obselete
I couldn't hear the beat
Staggerin about on me old mans feet
I had one foot in the grave
But now I'm nu rave!
But now I'm nu rave!

It's a mash up!
Pie and mash up!

Elements of the past
And elements of the future
Comin atcha
I'm the hitcher
Let me put you in the picture!

Eels up inside ya
Findin an entrance where they can
Eels up inside ya
Findin an entrance where they can

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either...

8O

Moving on to My Beloved Monster which I'd probably have as my ringtone if I thought it wouldn't offend my loved ones. (... my beloved monster is calling...)

He wrote a few songs for green monster-type characters in films - this one for Shrek...

My Beloved Monster

Their latest album is Hombre Lobo - 12 songs of desire. I'm struggling to get into it (some Eels albums are like that), but this one I like a lot.

Check out E's beard (most impressive), and the clip is amusing...

That look you give that guy

One of their strongly emotional songs is 3 Speed from Electro-shock Blues.

This is a song from E's sister's perspective - when she was young, and experiencing such pain from life. It looks at her life as she would like it, and features some of the most emotional lyrics for me:

Life is funny, but not 'ha ha' funny
Peculiar I guess
You think I've got it all going my way
Then why am I such a fucking mess?

And further...

Want a pony and a birthday cake
Want a party with a scary clown
Kneel down and bow to the princess
Kneel down to the queen of the town

And I looked up at the sky last night
And I thought I saw a bomb
And why won't you just tell me what's going on

Despite the fact that they put out a new album in June, it looks like the End Times are coming.

Wow, that's a quick follow-up!

OK, now I just know you're all eagerly awaiting the next song to listen to  so here goes:

Grace Kelly Blues is the 1st track on their Daisies of the Galaxy album. I was hooked the first time I heard it, and the album is probably the easiest to listen to. Some music critic or other likened the album to "a nice walk in the park, where you're occasionally bitten by a snake."

I couldn't find an Eels clip to this, so please ignore the visuals on the link, listen to the music (and the lyrics are great too)!

Grace Kelly Blues

Wow, this thread is going so well, I just have to post another song  (just joking, I'm happy to amuse myself here!)

I like Birds from Daisies of the Galaxy.

I like a girl with a dirty mouth
Someone that I can believe...

Dirty Girl

I love this song!

So, StevieG - have you picked up End Times yet? I've done one listen through and it already sounds considerably better to my ears than Hombre Lobo.

I missed all this. Wow, that mod squad jpg reminds me of boogie nights! Yes'm, ms moderator, sorry for the quadruple posting (I was going to see how many I could do before intervention  )

(hmm, maybe I could create an alternative account and discuss things with myself - GevieSte or something...)

In my infinite wisdom I didn't even think of merely editing my previous post and adding songs

Oh, and Cag, I haven't picked up End times yet - totally forgot. I'll go and get it next weekend I reckon.

Edited to add - PS. Thanks Luci for the watchie thingy nomination - I feel all special now!
