5 ingredients for the rest of your life.

Post by lorin »

If you had to pick 5 ingredients to live on the rest of your life, what would they be? There is a lot to consider when making the list. Here are my 5 and why;

Chicken - Diverse meat. you can cook it many ways. Excellent source of protein. You can rend fat to cook with.

Black beans - Another good source of protein, carbs and fiber. Store well. Make a good soup. Black beans hold up better than other beans. ( I am torn between this and potatos. You can bake with potatos, make potato four.)

Cabbage - Good fiber, cruciferous veggie, good raw or cooked, Vitamin C (I think)

Milk - good calcium, make cheese out of it, another source of fat

Granny smith apples - good for cooking, adding sweetness ,, flavor, diverse. you can make many things from them - apple butter, dried apples, baked apples. Store well in the winter. Source of vitamin C.

whole chicken - agreed

"fleur de sel" sea salt - makes even bland dishes tasty and it isn't as "damaging" as regular refined rock salt.

flour - with a bit of water and salt you can make bread and even pasta (a bit tricky without eggs but it works)

potatoes - very versatile vegetable

aliantha - I know it's cheating but SO F*CKING WHAT?

If the Jews fleeing Egypt can do it, I am sure you can for sure.
But Vader, where is your calcium, and your only fiber is potato skins.

1. Garlic (now there's a surprise! ;) )

The rest, I'll have to think about. (Can I say 'pig'?)

I said "whole chicken" - the bones would offer calcium. And potato skins are fine if they aren't too old and thick.

I work out at least 90 minutes a day. It compensates.

Some.

1.frutti di mare
2. chicken (I agree lorin's reasons, plus if it is a survival setting where I needed to raise, grow, or catch these ingredients I would also have a supply of fresh eggs which would not count in the five)
3. brown rice, which could be ground in to flour for breads and pastas
4. tomatoes (besides being versatile, will help ward off scurvy)
5. asparagus

Native American cultures got by on the "Three Sisters" of corn, beans and squash, so my list would start there. Then blueberries. Then chocolate.

Hold up, maybe chocolate is first. ;)

It's an edible substance... Wait, you're saying it's more like a requirement for life? I'd go along with that. In which case I get to add another food to my list! Hmm, what to add, what to add...

Sugar (for donuts)
Flour (to make donuts)
Salt (for everything else)
Coffee (to go with donuts)
Chicken (hey, it's chicken)

If you only get five ingredients for the rest of your life, who would want to have a long life expectancy?

1. Whiskey
2. Raspberries
3. Chocolate
4. Heavy Cream
5. Viagra (if I'm gonna eat 1-4 every day, I'm probably gonna need a little help.)
