Would Gilligan's Island have worked as Gilligan's Asteroid?

Would Gilligan's Island have worked as Gilligan's Asteroid?

Post by aTOMiC »

On a routine space ferry from Mars to Jupiter's moon Europa, the S.S. Minnow is struck by a fierce meteor shower and is forced to land upon one of the larger asteroids of our solar system. Hilarity ensues. Eh? Cool huh? Of course there would be no banana cream pies but you get the idea.

It was kinda difficult for Gilligan to accidentally kill everybody on the island. But I don't think they'd last a week in a place with extremely limited food and water, and a contained atmosphere.

And if Maryann had to wear a space suit, instead of *those shorts*... Well, there really weren't too many other reasons to watch the show.

No because The Professor slams in2 a bulkhead and is sent in2 a coma in the 1st episode. In the 2nd episode Gilligan fries the radio and in the 3rd they all run out of air and die...

One of my most cherished memories from being a student at the University of Michigan is when the marching band put on a halftime show at a football game of television theme songs. Somehow singing the theme song from Gilligan's Island at the top of your lungs with over 100,000 other people is a very special moment in your life. :)

Back to the topic, though...I would agree that food, water, and air might be serious problems...
But isn't this in effect sort of like Lost in Space? A small group of people stranded and not being able to get home? of course, they did ocaasionally move from planet to planet...

But they didn't have a bumbling Gilligan around, who might try to heat up some water with the laser rifle, and blow a hole in the dome. :)

Fist, you totally get it. Thats pretty much what I was thinking. Sure the series wouldn't last long. Gilligan is a full on walking hazard and stranded on an asteroid with him is near suicide. BUT. Given the circumstances of the original show, disaster was averted every week, sometimes by rather remarkable means. How the space-castaways get out of being popped by the vaccum of space or go insane or dehydrate to death is the most of the fun anyway. By the way, we'd find some method to get Ginger and Mary-Ann marching about in a cocktail dress and shorts respectively. :D

You might on the surface equate Dr. Smith's bungling and greed with Gilligan's incompetence but I don't think Dr. Smith is in the same league. Gilligan would have gotten the Robinson Family killed in the first episode. Dr. Smith took years and actively tried many times to cause trouble. Gilligan is a natural. You are also correct regarding the Jupiter II running about the cosmos just about every episode. Gilligan's Asteroid would be centered upon a black desolate, craggy rock with a perpetual enveloping night that would seem somewhat depressing compared to the rather whimsical and colorful planets of Lost in Space. They're doomed but what fun eh?

i agree with duchess .. to me there would be much to distinguish such a concept from LIS ;)

sure Gilligan was a bumbling element .. but i remember Dr Smith doing some pretty stupid stuff .. mishandling stuff .. creating chaos .. infact he did that with regular monotony! :P

Actually, there was a Saturday morning cartoon series back in 1982 called Gilligan's Planet. It was truly something beyond awful. Thanks for reminding me, people. :-x

Must we engage in these negative discussions? I think Scrappy Doo is the most evil concept ever dredged up from the depths of hell itself.

There was also a live action series called "Far Out Space Nuts" or something that starred Bob Denver? I seem to recall him pushing a "Launch" button, looking for lunch.

Here's what a reviewrer said about it: "Far Out Space Nuts - Bob Denver and Chuck McCann star as NASA ground crew members who accidentally launch themselves into outer space and have to try and find their way home. Sort of a Lost In Space meets Gilligan's Island."

So there you go. :screwy:

Actually, now that I think about it, why do we assume there'd be any air on the asteroid? Wouldthe Minnow somehow crash, yet retain it's air? Or would they crash into an asteroid floating in orbit around an M-class planet within it's atmosphere? Wouldn't that create intense heat? Speaking of that, if it wasn't an orbiting asteroid, wouldn't the crew of the Minnow freeze before they suffocated? WOuld the asteroid have a large worm in its middle, or would it carry the spores of billions of alien life forms?

And what if Gilligan was replaced by Jar-Jar Binks? :screwy:

All valid questions. I'll respond to the only one I can. This is more of a mini series idea. The castaways will undoubtably run out of air and food. We'll assume for the sake of argument that the ship crashed without venting the atmosphere into space. Provided a rescue craft doesn't arrive before the suppy of oxygen runs out, we'll have to guess these people are doomed. We can accelarate this process by mere fact that Gilligan is on board. :-)
