Lost In Space: Too silly or cool adventure?

Post by aTOMiC »

Lost in Space is a show that is a bit polarizing. Most sci fi fans turn their noses up at the adventures of the Robinson family. Too ridiculous. Too silly. I submit that the show ultimately became that but didn't start that way. If you've seen either of the two pilot episodes (especially the second which is truer to the actual concept of the show) you see an interesting, crafty story that at its genesis seemed a bit bleak. After a season or more LS began to focus a little too much on Dr. Smith, Wil and the Robot. As a kid, I loved the Robot! So cool. At the time I didn't know it but the "Lost" part of Lost in Space was fast becoming the integrity of its direction. By the end we were assaulted by humanoid carrots running about yelling "I need moisture. I must have moisture!" As a direct adversary to Star Trek, Lost in Space doesn't come close, but there is more action and adventure to be had than I believe most people think. "Crush, Kill, Destroy!" The guest appearance of "Robbie the Robot" from Forbidden planet was cool. I liked and still like Lost in Space. I don't however have good feelings about the movie of a few years ago. Great soundtrack. Occasionally impressive special effects. Outside of the fact that it was titled Lost in Space and the fact that the Robot's voice must have been the same guy from the original series, I never felt as though I was watching the same story unfold. I enjoyed LS the movie but not as a re make. :D

LIS just wasn't that good, in my opinion. It was B&W when color was an option, and all common sense and logic must have been completely throw out by the third episode. That ship was way too small to cover any real amount of territory, and I do not recall any cryogenic chambers, so the crew would have undoubtedly died of old age before reaching the next solar system; forget about finding inhabited planets. Having said that, I completely enjoyed the few episodes I was privileged enough to see as a child. Do you have copies of those pilots? I'd like to refresh my memory... Man, I absolutely loved Dr. Smith!:screwy:

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

I used to absolutely love Lost In Space!! .. if i watched it now .. i'm not sure i would enjoy it as much .. but i recall coming home after school and watching LIS and never missing an episode regardless of how silly .. or whether fundamentally based in lunacy!

I still love LIS .. my memory of it .. and probably there always will .. for nostalgic reasons ..

i havent seen it for maybe 10-15 years .. it would be good to see it again .. and revisit those fond memories again!!

i loved Dr Smith too!! he was sooo annoying and selfish .. i also like Will Robinson ..

I get the feeling from your post that you really didn't read mine. But in any case, B&W wasn't much of an option for them. Logic left in the second episode. The size of the ship was accurate given the size of their universe. :-)
There were stasis chambers on the Jupiter II. I'm glad you liked it though. If you like I can lend you the 7 or 8 episodes I have on tape. :-)

I watched LIS just about the same way you did Sky. I have a the first 2 pilot episodes on tape and several other misc episodes. I'd like to get the whole deal on dvd in the future. :-) I have a 1 foot high action figure of the Robot that lights up and speaks. Too Cool.

6 reasons why I could never stand LIS:
1. Couldn't stand the actor that played the Commander Don-boy, or whatever-had serious desire to punch him in face...
2. Couldn't take it seriously at all when Timmy's mom (from Lassie) is dressed up in that god-awful outfit
3. Mr. Robinson was a dork
4. Dr. Smith was a sick pedophile
5. Everything else was corny but Robbie was cool and Judy was a fox.
6. Everytime I actually tryed to watch it my pesky little sister would switch to The Monkees! :-x :D

I did like the movie though--it was fun and Matt Le Blanc rocked! But Mr. Rob, still dorky... :|

Okay thats just sick.

There was a Simpsons episode that featured Mark Hamill at a Sci Fi convention that had a scene with Bart. He was taliking to the LIS robot and Johnathan Harris (Dr. Smith) Smith makes some "inappropriate" comment to Bart and the Robot exclaims. "Danger Bart Simpson. Danger."

"Perv indeed! Oh the pain. The pain."

I saw that Simpsons the other day, it's the Mark Hammill one.

I always liked Lost in Space. When I was a kid it used to part of Channel 4's sci-fi sunday. Land of the Giants, Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and The Time Tunnel. Classic viewing!

I quite liked the film, but they tried far, far too hard to turn it into a franchise and it spoils what might have otherwise been remembered as an enjoyable family film.

Oh, does anyone know what the point of Heather Graham was in that film?

Lost In Space is a show I how dear to my heart.... ahhh the memories of my innocent childhood days running home from school to watch it. The monsters used to scare the crap out of me ... I was literally terrified of them and couldnt watch them unless I had a pillow in front of my eyes.

Speaking of space and sci fi remakes..... I was thrilled to see a trailer of the remake of THE THUNDERBIRDS at the cinema just recently.....now THERES a blast from the past........ THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
