Acropolis 1.0 Music

Post by Virelai »

As Mistress of Song, I felt starting this was appropriate.
There is a similar topic in another realm, yet I will understand should this be deemed extravagant by the Autarch and it vanishes from our awareness.

That said, I find myself looking at Chime's spiral, and contemplating what it signifies. I will admit it still mostly stumps me.

However, I stumbled upon an old song which his spiral reminds me of, and a beautiful rendition of it recorded in the last few earthly years. I figured I would share it here. Perhaps I will do the same, as I stumble upon others for the other deities of our fair City.

Or perhaps they shall choose to share a melody of themselves, to better teach us of their doctrine.

For Chime...
in Windmills of Your Mind, All Angels wrote:Round, like a circle in a spiral,
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel.
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream.

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes of its face.
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that you said?
Lovers walking along the shore,
Leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And a fragment of a song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
You were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves returned
To the colour of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

If I had to guess, I'd say it was the Fibinacci Sequence, or Golden Spiral. I'm no music theorist, but I believe that there's something about the mathematical relationship of one musical note to the next, being somehow based on that pattern. That's what I remember from the old Walt Disney thing. (So old, it actually had Walt himself in it, if memory serves.)

This was also strongly featured in an episode of Criminal Minds.
To seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night.

My .sig comes from Simon and Garfunkel's "A Poem on the Underground Wall, though the full song isn't really appropriate for the Acropolis setting.
  • The last train is nearly due.
    The underground is closing soon.
And in the dark deserted station,
    Restless in anticipation,
A man waits in the shadows.

His restless eyes leap and scratch
At all that they can touch or catch.
And hidden deep within his pocket,
    Safe within it's silent socket,
    He holds a colored crayon.

Now from the tunnel's stony womb
The carriage rides to meet the groom,
And opens wide and welcome doors
    But he hesitates, then withdraws
    Deeper in the shadows.

And the train is gone suddenly
    On wheels clicking silently
    Like a gently tapping litany.
And, he holds his crayon rosary
    Tighter in his hand.

Now from his pocket quick he flashes,
The crayon on the wall he slashes,
    Deep upon the advertising,
    A single worded poem comprised
    Of four letters.

And his heart is laughing, screaming, pounding
The poem across the tracks rebounding
    Shadowed by the exit light
His legs take their ascending flight
To seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night.

In every language, the message stays the same...
Sing utaou koewo awase
kanashiikoto wasurerutame
Sing utaou shiawasega kuruyouni
ookina koewo dashi hazukashigarazu
Just sing, sing a song

Sing, 歌おう 声を合わせ
悲しいこと 忘れるため
Sing, 歌おう 幸せが来るように
大きな声を出し 恥ずかしがらず
Just sing, sing a song...
...yeah, yeah, yeah
sappy to the core, OK?

Nyx you are correct it IS the golden spiral, and I am glad to see that some of the citizens of the city are coming to understand its significance in my domain.

Virelai, perhaps the golden spiral reminds you of another symbol that falls within your domain, the treble clef?

There may be some young'uns here, who have no idea what you're talking about, Surya...

hmm.
If I focus on the curl of the treble clef...

...perhaps.

However, I find the bass clef to remind me more of the golden spiral, if drawn in the opposite direction.

"Come within the Alta Cantabile and meditate upon Calling the Soul," Melody instructs all who seek Unison and Harmony within Irshirel. "Our inner Song calls to us all. Let Our Lady fill your being, and Her Song will flow out from within you to influence elsewhere."

Here is a new Hymn to be inserted in to the Office of Evensong. The lyrics for this hymn are in tribute to our Nightly Sleep.

The evening hangs beneath the moon,
A silver thread on darkened dune.
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon.

Upon my pillow, safe in bed,
A thousand pictures fill my head,
I cannot sleep, my mind’s a-flight;
And yet my limbs seem made of lead.

If there are noises in the Night,
A frightening shadow, flickering light;
Then I surrender unto sleep,
Where clouds of dream give second sight.

What dreams may come, both dark and deep,
Of flying wings and soaring leap
As I surrender unto sleep,
As I surrender unto sleep.
