Damn, that's almost exactly as I picture him when I read the books. It's all in the cheekbones, jaw and eyes. Excellent work!

:) The latest one is very good - the first ones had the appearance and were serious work, but this has the expression on the face I could absolutely place on TC's - just wonderful. :D

Truly Awesome. The first one, actually looks like it could be Stephen Baldwin. I never considered him, but, wow, the look really works for Covenant (Not sure he could act part, but, he could definitely look the part)

Covenant's image

Post by Christophe »

Hello, I'm a new dude or as the kids say: a newdie. Anyway I wish to comment on the works by "hue of bone" that I've seen here. These are absolutely images of Thomas Covenant as I envisioned except for one thing.
The only reason I know this one thing is that I have had way too many physical problems throughout my own life and these have altered my face, neck and even skin texture. I picture his face as harsher, both in texture and expression. He glares a lot, and I find myself doing the same thing. Do that enough and it alters your face. I believe that, over the years, pain and depression doesn't only alter your outlook, but your actual looks as well.
Your work is wonderful "hue of bone" and you have certainly captured Covenant.

Hail! hue of bone, Hail! and Thank You

I just wanted to add this: When I first read the books: I was always on a search to find the perfect T. Covenant. It wasn't till some years later that I decided on actor Scott Glenn. I think he's probably too old by now, but I think that he had the right vibe.

I'll have to agree with Christophe, constant glaring and grimacing does leave a permanent mark on one's face, especially regarding the 2nd chrons Covenant, who has had a decade's worth of 'hellfire and bloody damnation' to abide with. ;) The expression (in the last textured version) looks a smidgen too soft and kindly for him, particularly around the mouth and the eyes. Otherwise the outline of the face fits him really well. Just a suggestion, but you might try harshening it and aging him up a tad.

Sorry I'm spamming your thread with my own tosh, but I've reffed some of your pictures for inspiration, et cetera. When I read TWL, my mind's eye sees something like this. You're of course absolutely free to portray him as you like, this is more in the lines of 'this and this actor reminds me of him' than anything else. :)

Nice Zorm! I am re-reading these books after many years, and am just finishing Lord Foul's Bane. Your great drawing brought to mind the expression that Covenant must have had when Elena said that she would give him a shave. Like I said: It's been a lot of years since I read the books so if I got the scenario (which I haven't re-read yet) wrong, I apologize.
You're good dude. Keep it up.

Regards, Christophe

Thanks, glad you liked. :) I didn't have any specific scene in mind, more like a generic 2nd chronicles Covenant louring away. Took a few redraws to capture the intensity I wanted his gaze to have. I recall he was around 30 in the first chrons, so I'd probably erase a few age-lines away if I wanted to portray him in those settings. But leave the hard mouth and mad eyes.

I'm not a dude, though.

Hube, I love the last version of TC that you posted. The only nit I have that keeps it from perfection is the full and rosy lips.
In Lord Foul's Bane was wrote:His lips were thin and tight, like the chiseled mouth of an oracle [...]
In The Wounded Land was wrote:His mouth was as strict as a stone tablet [...]

His mouth was as sharp as a blade [...]
Sorry, Zorm, but Hue of Bone's idea is nearer how I see Covenant than yours. Purely a matter of my internal conception, and no reflection on you. (I think because it's too angry, and too Amish farmer.)

The other thing I love is how Hube's imagining supports my notion that Adrien Brody would be an excellent Covenant.
