Done,

But I must say, I think this book lacked narrative focus. I can tell, as I couldn't tell with AFFC, that GRRM had trouble with this one. I didn't rip through it the way I've ripped through all the other books in this series.

p. 229 of 1094 in the Reader version.

I'm going more slowly than usual, in the hopes of keeping everybody straight.

I haven't even got it yet. I'm still reading 'Crippled God'; I'll order the Martin book when I'm down to the last 100 pages.

I started reading a little at a time on some work days. Then the weekend came and I couldn't put it down till I was done. :P

Page 586. I didn't get much read over the weekend -- too busy doing other stuff.

Not much discussion here. I hope that's not a bad sign. Can anyone give non-spoiler opinions? I appreciated SS's brief comments, though I would have said the same thing about AFFC.

Hmm. Well. He's got a lot of threads going here. Not sure yet whether that qualifies as lacking narrative focus, as I'm only a titch over halfway through, but I think that argument could be made.

Like SS, I'm not ripping through this one. Maybe that's because I'm pretty sure there isn't going to be a satisfying denouement to many (any?) of the story arcs.

For those who are done:
Spoiler
Is there any significance, by the end of the book, to Theon's trip into the Stark catacombs? Any indication of where the missing swords have gone? Or was it just an appropriately eerie and isolated setting for Lady Whatshername's comments to him?

I haven't read the book, but I read your spoiler, and I can say the second question is answered in A Clash of Kings.
Spoiler
Bran, Osha, and the others took swords when they hid there from Theon.
Spoilered just to avoid spoiling your question, heh. Someone needs to start a discussion topic where spoilers can be let loose.

Mmm, I might vaguely remember that, kinda. Thanks, Murrin.

Eventually I guess I'll have to go back and re-read all the books. But I'll probably wait 'til he's done with the series.

Still slugging through very slowly at about p. 223--The current Jon chapter felt a little flat and pedestrian and not really up to Martin's standards---oh yes it was absolutely necessary and picked up at the end kinda like
Spoiler
everybody's going to die or starve to death, and plucked your heartstrings re: Jon's dilemma
I just felt parts were very flat. He does a fantastic job in the opening of the next Tyrion chapter, and I'm enjoying that immensely--George, obviously, has a major soft spot for Hugo. Dam that miniseries---I can't help but see the actors as the characters now. Which leads back to the question: who should play Davos?
