Smaug needing a bridge to attack Laketown. huh?

I'm trying to find that one line that explains why Smaug needed the bridge to get to Laketown rather then just flying over and landing.

I keep missing it though.

Something about the lake being mighter then he, and quenching him. As far as why he didn't land on the town, there might not have been enough room for him to do so, not without being awkward or impaling himself.
