This thread is for random thoughts and stories that don't fit elsewhere.

This morning I helped my daughter get made up and accessorized to be a bridesmaid in her friend's wedding.

She looks purty.

(And no, I don't have a pic right now. You'll just have to take my word for it. ) 8)

Pics, yes, and make her post them herself. ;)

(I thought this was what the "how are you feeling today?" thread was for. Oh well, whatever)

Well this isn't really a "how I'm feeling" post. It's random stuff.

I use the "how are you feeling" thread more for...well, how I'm feeling! ;)

And that's what I observe others do, too.

My story just didn't seem to fit there, so I made a new thread.

Cause you can never have too many never-ending, continually updating threads. ;) :D

I really like the idea of this thread.

I woke up this morning remembering an episode from my past.

When I was about 7 or 8 years old I went to school in Queens, NY. In those days it was normal and acceptable for a child that age to take the bus or subway. One morning I was waiting for the bus at a busy intersection with a bunch of classmates. All the kids were standing around, doing the clowning around that an 8 year old will do. One kid, I never knew which kid, pulled the red fire alarm box that used to be on every corner of every street. All the playing stopped, we all froze, knowing that the fire truck and the police cars would be there any moment. All of us in one swift motion, ran in terror, scattering to the four winds. I ran with some children, down the streets to one kids home to hide. I was a latchkey kid so I couldn't run home. So we ran to the 5 story walkup and I went with my friend up the stairs and breathlessly ran into her home. Her elderly grandmother came running down the hallway and asked her granddaughter what had happened. The old woman listened intently as the granddaughter described in a hasty mix of English and Spanish, the incident and that she didnt know who pulled the alarm. After she had finished the old woman shook her head sadly and walked away.

As she walked down the hall, she sighed and said "It must have been a Jew" 8O

Random stories.... when I was about 17 I was riding a bike through the woods. I was wearing a dress, of course. This was way before anyone thought of mountain biking; the bike was a WW2-era Raleigh, no gears, indestructible. I came up over the crest of a hill and nearly ran over my boss, who was jogging.

I swerved, we said "hey", and kept going our separate directions.

I used to work 6pm - midnight processing checks for a bank. One day I decided to call off sick and spend the day shopping at Bambergers(Macys). So I did just that. At around 10pm when the store closed I went to the store parking lot. I pulled up, one car behind to the booth with my validated parking ticket and saw my boss working as the attendant. I backed the car away, freaking out that he would see I was not sick and sat in the parking lot for more than an hour not knowing what to do. At around 11pm the lights in the parking lot went out and I was the only car left there. I knew I had to leave. So I pulled up to the booth and handed the ticket to my boss. We both looked at each other and looked quickly away. I knew at that moment he was more devastated that I found him working at a 'menial' part-time job than busting me for a fake call-off. I returned the next day to work. Nothing was ever mentioned about our brief encounter by either of us.

I went over to a friend's house tonight to knit with her and some other women. On the way home, around 10pm, I stopped at the grocery store for a carton of milk and a few other things. When I got in line, I noticed that the customers waiting in front of me were a mom (in what looked suspiciously like pajama pants) and her daughter, who looked to be about 9 or 10. Mom was squirting a bottle of lice treatment all over her daughter's hair. In the grocery store line. Before she'd even paid for the stuff. That poor kid....

My guess is that the daughter didn't think to pull the notice from the school out of her backpack until Mom had already gotten her jammies on.

When I was 8 my parents moved us to Switzerland. When we got there my father did not speak German. He took us to a hotel in the mountains to live while he looked for an apartment. He did not know it was a place for detoxing alcoholics. Lots of groaning and shouting at night. I used to walk in the woods by myself all the time. One day I met an older man in the woods. He didn't speak English and I didn't speak German. We ended up sitting together alone building a moss and sticks miniature village under the trees for four hours. Totally safe, totally innocent, totally never happen nowadays.
