Since I haven't seen the film my opinions are just that...opinions. However based on having watched and enjoyed all the related Marvel setup films and reading through the 30+ reviews that have been posted so far I am very confident that The Avengers will be as good if not better than advertised.

Even people who don't normally like superhero movies should probably watch this one because it will be a cultural event. Although not the first "super team" movie--we have already had Fantastic Four, X-Men, and even Mystery Men back in 1998 (or was it 1999?)--none of them were like this one will be.

I have to catch up on some of the set-up films [haven't seen thor, for instance]...but I have to say the ads have convinced me it will at least look cool and be action packed...and I love the trailer lines [I hope they aren't too far out of context] from Downey...roughly "what are you without that metal suit" "A billionaire, genius, playboy."
And "We have an army!" "We have a Hulk!"

I hear movie producers like to have a trial showing with an audience that's clearly highly intelligent, witty and discerning, so of course they try it out in Australia! 
The movie is a real blockbuster and reminds me of the type of blockbusters of yesteryear with a big, big cast. The cast is very appreciable in Avengers, but the real cast is the heroes themselves so rather than the big movies having the likes of Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson, who all pretty much played themselves in a lot of their movies, we have these larger than life characters, all household names, as the stars. The fact that we have already 'met' these characters and they've been established in their own movies, helps to eliminate too much pre story, tho' there's a bit of room for a fill-in for Hawkeye and Ms. Romanov.
The interaction between them is well crafted, with all the expected prejudices of each hero's background competing, but as the movie grows so does the uniting rather than the dividing factors of the team. Vraith you'll be pleased to know there are a good few more 'lines' you'll enjoy as there's a good spattering of humour as well as few conceivably poignant moments.
The effects are very well done and the recent complaint I made about the amazing Transformers/Battleship technology not being used well is met here along with excellent use of the 3D effects. The sound is big and really needs to be seen (of course I mean heard) in the theatre in 7.1. The movie is pretty long but no complaints there as it rolls through the story and keeps pace and momentum throughout.
No oscar winners, but everyone puts in a creditable performance to the extent that you are really identifying with the characters, not the actors; as it should be really.
The end scene hints at greater things to come.
I can't say more without spoilers, not that there are any major plot twists, but I was wondering about Thor's Hammer which to date has always returned, however there was some hint that it was not behaving on cue and it did not appear to be accidental as it would have been easy to trim those small hints. I seem to remember that he had to retrieve the hammer in a short time or revert to Donald Blake, tho' that would not run in this plotline of Thor....but curious nonetheless...
Definitely worth getting to see and go 3D.

Do I need to see Thor and Captain America before I watch this one?

You don't have to but it can't hurt and it will fill in some backstory with Loki (who also caused the Avengers to form in the comics) and the Tesseract (formerly knows as Cosmic Cube).
Odin clearly states that anyone worthy of Mjolnir is able to wield it, so it could be responding to someone else worthy enough.
Cosmic Cubes were also nascent sentient beings. I wonder if that will play any part in the movie? Long before all the Infinity Gauntlet and its ridiculous spin-offs/sequels, didn't the Cosmic Cube turn up in the hands of A.I.M and, later, Thanos? I think Owen Reece, the Molecule Man, was eventually revealed to be a living Cosmic Cube with a few personally-imposed limitations...but now I am bleeding over into the comics forum.

If you are interested in seeing The Avengers why wouldn't you have been interested in seeing Thor and Captain America respectively?
I realize that The Avengers is a sort of "event" film but the content and characters are all Marvel Comics fans heavy hitters so to speak.

Not a comics fan, really. t's more of the opposite of an automatic selling point when they bring out a film about some character that only the comic readers actually think is a big name.
Thor just didn't interest me at all. Thought about Captain America but didn't get around to it. I don't really go to the cinema at all usually, and those two haven't been on TV yet.
Some of the comics stuff interests me, some doesn't. Depends how good it looks from previews. I never bothered seeing Hulk because it didn't look like it would be good, but The Incredible Hulk looked like it had potential (and I wasn't disappointed), for example. I had no interest at all in Superman Returns, but I wanted to watch the Batman films from the start.
And The Avengers has Downey Jr's Iron Man (I enjoyed the previous films), and Joss Whedon as writer/director, so it interests me more than Thor and Captain America did.
