Forge of Darkness

Post by Mr. Broken »

Forge of Darkness, the first installment of Eriksons Malazan prequel trilogy is set to be released in the UK this August. September here in the states. I know I am not alone in my eager anticipation of this work.

The cover art features a sword hilt, so I'm hoping for more details on Rakes forging of Grief, as well as further accounts of the Hust Legion, and the blades they carried. Can't wait!

I'm also curious about the origins of the Shake.

Yeah...I was thinking about it...the Andii story line has never been my favourite, apart from Rake of course.

Not that this will stop me from getting them.

All of that is how I feel. I just have to have faith in SE. Which I do. I just hope there's lots of good guest stars.

Well, Draconus will be there for one...but it'll be the old Draconus, before...millennia? in Dragnipur.

So, after determining that A Storm of Swords sucks ;) I have decided to take yet another break to have a crack at this. About a hundred pages into it and it is pretty amazing right now.
Spoiler
T'riss has just made one of the most unsettling entrances thus far. In case you don't recall who T'riss is, read Esslemont, slackers!

I'm waiting for a 20% Off coupon from B&N. The jacket notes sound plenty good, so I'm really looking forward to it. But it's $30, so...

erikson was here in SF last saturday at borderlands books so i hadda go out and meet him.

before the reading started i went out to smoke a cig and he was out there but his lighter wasn't working so i offered my lighter and we had a brief chat.

i asked him how it felt to be the rock star of epic fantasy and he said "oh I'M not the rock star of epic fantasy, that's george rr martin!" LOL!!

i did record about a minute and a half of the reading on my phone and took a couple of stills which i'll post this weekend when i get a chance to download them.

when he signed my copy of the book he wrote "to lucinda, thanks for the light"
which is kinda cool on several different levels.
(lucinda means bringer of light, i gave him a light, the title of the book is forge of darkness...)

Neat! I'll be seeing him this upcoming Tuesday, hopefully. By then, I should have the book read and I can pester him about the next installment.

ali...

he doesn't offer many openings to chat, he's not unfriendly, just
sort of...

well...stupidly, i felt like i was standing in front of some of the most
intimidatingly extraordinary characters (whiskeyjack, dujek, caladan
brood, duiker, tool, trull, toc, coltaine ...freakin anomader rake forgodsake...) all living inside the mind of this slight and unassuming man, it's like he is this
literary multitude...

so...i felt like..how do you make conversation with the guy..i mean..
which one of those guys do you address? :faint:

while smoking we didn't really get into conversation except you know,
minor pleasantries..the Q&A was really one of the best i've ever been
to as far as authors go.
his readers tend not to ask where he gets his ideas and shit of that
nature. heh. so rather than being that much "q&a" it was more like
a conversation.
he's got (as we already know) a great sense of humor. very funny and
well...bah i can go on admiring him for days so i'll shut up my fan girl face
now.

orlion don't tell him i gushed ok?

Yup, exactly. I suspect he's pretty much of an introvert -- the shy one-on-one kind of guy. He didn't know what to say, and (being kind of similarly similar) neither did I. Your having an activity in common with him (smoking) was probably a great advantage to even exchanging pleasantries.

I shoulda told him I know Jenn.

omg omg....

i'm just at the whole hearthstone setting scene (for those
of you who are ahead of me) between Anomander, Andarist, and
the Azathanai High Mason!!! omg omg omg i love this scene!!!
it's all fraught with tension and heavy portent and shit of that nature
and then...at the very end of the scene...

"The Azathanai then held up a hand, and Sparo was shocked to see blood streaming down from a deep gash in the palm. 'Then it is done."
As he turned away, Anomander called out to him, 'A moment, please. You are known by title alone. I will have your name.'
The huge man half swung round, studied Anomander for a moment,
and then said, 'I am named..."

forget it, i'm not blowin this one for anyone! :P

wootey woot woot!!!

at the reading several of the folks there talked about how there were many many "ah ha" moments in this book. this is the first of those for me. friggin awesome one too! :D
