2012 Watchy Discussion

Post by [Syl] »

You want to talk about the Watchies? Great. Do it here. This is also where any off-topic posts will be moved.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Posted this in the category nominations thread and then thought better of it and put it here:

I second all of these (if that's allowed 8O ).

I'd also like to propose a Watchy for Duo of the Year, (just so that I can highlight [Syl] and Cail's burgeoning bromance (and I also wanted to be able to write 'burgeoning bromance' )).

So these are for any threads/posts made in 2012 only, right?

31 categories! Flamin' Nora! That's more categories than active Watchers
I want at least two this time

This is the post I wanted to put in one of the nominations threads:
I nominate Asterix and Obelix for the year 201

For 2012 I nominate Cail/[Syl], [Syl]/Cail (there's no way I'm going to try and pick a straightman/foil between those two Alphas  ). Check out this over and back to get a sense of the love. Awwww!

Okay... Story-time!!!

Several years ago, after lots of periods of being indecisisve about whether I was really gonna stick with the Watch or not, I created a thread on a whim... (or... more on a dare from my younger sister, of all things!)

I still don't quite know why a thread started with such inauspicious beginnings and with such utterly non-contributing intent on my part won "Best thread in the Chronicles sub-forum" for that year.
8O

But it made me go, "Okay, I'm a 'nobody' on that forum... if I can win a Watchy, then maybe, just maybe..."
And I came back.

With this story, I am, of course, hinting at a certain course of action...
What do you think?

They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor

I'm conflicted about the nomination I just got. I don't think I did anything to merit it in 2012, but not sure if the etiquette allows for declining.

(I'll make my own noms sometime soon.)

Apologies if I've put you in a sticky situation, Murrin. I was thinking of your general contribution to the Watch and also your consistent input into the General Fantasy/Sci-Fi forum. And also you bravery at setting up the new book club (suggested in December  ).

Heh. I will not deny I'm gunning for an award next year. I just think until recently all I did was sit back and occasionally delete spam.

Strewth! An alt of mine (back when alts were not barred from the Watchies...) declined a nomination a few years back in order to advance the chances of a more worthy candidate... who subsequently won the Watchy in question.

However, I think Murrin is an appropriate candidate for Best Mod...as are numerous other mods.

Vraith's free range snark. Hmm, maybe this should go in Best Title too?

[my apologies for moving this, Shaun. you already seconded an avatar. it's either nominate or second in each category; not both. ~m]

Uh, does that mean the 1st is the last day we can nominate etc? Or that the 28th is?

hmm.

The sheriff told me until the 1st. Unless we hear differently, let's say through the 1st, since February is a short month.

That can't be right. It should be one nomination and one second, just not for the same person.

It was that way for the 2009 Watchies, but not any time the sheriff is the mod. This is why I am posting who nominates and who seconds, so it is easier to keep track.

Choice of doing one or the other per category, not both.

I am uncertain whether one is allowed to nominate oneself, so for now I am leaving sarge's poetry nomination alone. I'll let the sheriff make that particular call.

Given we can't second and nom in the same thread, anyone feel like nominating Orlion as Funniest watcher? Just a suggestion :-)

I think I will, Shaun. Apparently Vraith has nominated me, but surely it is supposed to be funny ha ha, not funny peculiar? Although very flattered, a propensity to spout G&S at will probably doesn't qualify! But thanks all the same, Vraith. :D
I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!
