Clues in the Glossary.

Post by peter »

I finished AATE last night (3rd reading - the best so far!) and not having time to start a new book and just out of mindless curiosity I read the combined Glossary at the back of the book. A couple of things struck me and I wondered if they were clues to things we might see in TLD that had slipped through the net. If you aren't into this detective stuff stop reading now.

If you are still here here's the two things I spotted. Firstly the Quellvisk are refered to as 'apparently extinct' which might imply they are not. Perhaps we shall meet them in the final volume. Second, I see a Haruchi named Zaynor from 'a time long before the Haruchai came to the Land' mentioned. I have no recollection of this name before so perhaps we shall take a trip back into Haruchai history - gosh, how much do I want this!

Lastly, I have a weird idea. Could Joan be SWMNBN and if so could LF himself be none other than..........no - that's ridiculous!

Anybody else want to play guessing games :D

From Stave's story of the Insequent in FR, I believe Zaynor was the "weakest" Haruchai that first challenged the Vizard.

You haven't been reading my numerous posts on this issue, have you? I love playing that particular guessing game.

Didn't the Vizard defeat the whole group of Haruchai he encountered all at once? Alas someone dissapeared with my FR copy so I can't check it out, but as the H were travelling in a group I assume they must have been on the way somewhere (they lead solitary lives up in the mountains don't they?) and I'd assumed that must have been the Land.

 I'm glad someone else has had that idea Z - I was a bit embarrased about it after I made the post!

The H-s were in fact traveling in the opposite direction from the Land, meaning that the Insequent live somewhere West of the Land and the Haruchai mountain homeland.

A group of them (the same number as the Bloodguard, I think) travelled to seek new challenges they could prove themselves against by, challenging them to duel where they would beat them to pulp.

The Visard sat by his hut in their way. Being too arrogant to step around him they demanded he get out of their way/bow to their superior prowess. When they couldn't defeat him they ran away back home and onward into the Land and Revelstone.

Thanks Shoe - and did the aforementioned Zaynor indeed feature as described in making the first challange to the Visard. [Spare a thought for this guy - being the aknowledged 'weakest of the Haruchai' cannot have been an easy role to bear. Zaynor deserves a book to himself in my eyes!]

Just another glossery related point - the Insequent are described as 'A mysterious people living to the far West of the Land'. There is I think a disparity in this description, as against what we have been led to believe in the text. The description of them as 'a people' gives them the feel of say, a race. The text has built up the image of the Insequent as individuals who by by the study of Thaumaturgy, Divination and Necromancy have raised themselves above their normal human limitations to become the powerfull beings we encounter.

But they are still human, they still have children, grow old and die (except for one).
I got the impression that all the Insequent's started life as regular humans, farmed and worked the land and lived like everyone else but then they became super-Unfettered as they got older.

Maybe it's like a puberty trigger that happens in the late 20's after they have a few kids.

Didn't the Haruchai see the Insequent land as tilled and pleasant?

I guess they could work on their obsessions and still raise a family and farm and whatnot.
There's no reason they would want to leave and explore the world unless their specialty called for that to happen.

One of the Insequent explains that in their youth they are drawn together for...I forget what fancy terms he used, but for partying and sex and companionship. THEN they begin their solitary quests for knowledge and...solitude.

Kinda like Salmon I guess, only instead of dying they become nerds after mating.

I really wanna know if they have actually been there the whole time, effecting history from the shadows as it appears, or if they were suddenly made via some nerd version of the big bang, and then spread out over time and space like cosmic nerdy cockroaches.

Because they all seem to know each other. Oh, now who's a racist? Since we are all Insequent we all must know each other, is that it?!? Even if the only mention of the Vizard in a specific time is like 10,000 years from the Harrow's time (Current time) and the Harrow definitely cannot time travel?!
I know what an analogy is! It's like a thought...with another thought's hat on...?

The thing most people don't remember in regards to the Haruchai, is that you NEVER EVER play poker with them!

They seem to be small in number and very 'specialist' in thier particular form of the craft - also they have very rigid strictures effecting their very existence re the treading on eachothers toes. Such particulars would lean toward a high degree of knowledge regarding eachother.

First...the reverse-salmon thing cracked me up. Nice.
I think they were already there. Not all, or probably even most of them, can time travel. In fact, I think we know exactly 2 who can.
[and I'm not even certain about the Mahdoubt...I think its possible something more subtle/interesting is going on there, but I'll have to ponder it on a re-read].
We know they can live very long...but we don't know that they all know each other...we only know that they know OF each other. [we have no evidence either way whether the Harrow ever met the Vizard...and to me the dialogue between Mahdoubt and Harrow seems exactly like that. They know each other's tendencies, pursuits, reputations, but this is the first time they've ever met.]
Actually, we have one small piece of evidence that they've always been there, maybe, if you can trust them: The Elo. encounter...the Insequent have been messing with the Elo basically since the beginning. Infelice would know if the Insequent had popped up due to Linden or TC or Jerry/Roger changing the past...And she'd be damned sure to mention a screw-up like that [well, scew up in the Elo's eyes].
And I'm not sure how they could pop up in a big bang and scatter through time and NOT make an unsupportable [by the Arch] change in time.
One or two...maybe...but a whole race changing fundamental events across the entire arc of history??
I don't like that. Doesn't mean you're wrong, just seems unlikely and that I wouldn't like the resulting "story" if you're right.
Sig-man, Libtard, Stupid piece of shit. change your text color to brown. Mr. Reliable, bullshit-slinging liarFucker-user.
the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

Don't think of them as a race, (ya racist  ), think of them as a guild or union of wisdom/lore seekers.
