Group Reads, how these forums work--General messages

Post by danlo »

A group read is a fairly simple matter, we just need to get together and decide what to read and when and then set a date (and time) to come back and discuss what's been read. Some websites do it chapter by chapter, some do it with 2 or 3 chapters. So what shall we do--start with the 1st chapter in LFB? Something else? When shall we read as a group?

I think Chapter by Chapter is manageable - if not slow :)

I'm also not entirely sure how these things work. Does the originator indicate up-front what questions/issues will be discussed afterwards?

The originator picks the start date, duration of read and leads the beginning of discussion. The originator comes up w/a question or an analysis to get the discussion started. Example: Ok, Friday Oct 4th we will read The Golden Boy and begin discussion of that chapt. Wednesday Oct 9th--so 4th. (I suggest we combine The Golden Boy with You Cannot Hope as they are both fairly small chapts.)--anyone can ask a question after that--it's basically freeform...

Reading

Post by Michael Giantfriend »

I'm reading a lot of stuff at the mo - "The Man Who Fought Alone" by our own SRD; some books about the German-Soviet war 1941-45; "Shakedown" (one of the Doctor Who New Adventures series); a starter book on Heraldry; oh, and I've started trying to teach myself German. But I think I can fit in a chapter or 2 of LFB this evening and come back to you on Sunday or Monday as there's a full-day Buffy event tomorrow that I'm going to :) - the Crimelords of Sunnydale (Warren, Jonathan and Andrew) - so I won't be able to post then :(

Cool idea, whoever thought of it... the reading, not the Buffy thing...

High Lord - I find all the discussions very compelling and can't help but jump in on the various topics.

I am looking forward to the read/discuss. I know you all will bring new thoughts & insights to SRD's writing that I surely would not think of on my own.

I am glad I found this site & that all the KW inhabitants are so forth coming with ideas! :D

Yes, this is a really cool idea. One of the things that sort of bogs down the discussions on the other board is that not everybody has read the books relatively recently. So this is good, because we will all (literally) be on the same page....

Here's a few themes I've thought up.

Contradiction / paradox / dillema in the Chronicles

The land as-a-body metaphor

Dispair and survival

It would be interesting to explore the underlying religious themes as well.

I'm not a poet but I never quite found any of the poetry or songs to be hugely inspiring. Maybe someone can assist in identifying that which I am missing.

Also, I assume we will not be referencing to future events or will we? I'm such a NooB :)

Actually, Vain, you just gave me an idea for another theme:

Finding hints regarding future events.

SRD claims that he is a tight writer, that everything in the story has a purpose directing us to the climax at the end. We can try to check that out as we read along.

Arg! Heh. I get so busy with school work and crud that I hardly get a chance to read Covenant. Hence I'm already falling miserably behind. Ack. Well, let me see what I can do around the Watch regardless.-jay

Hey, I like this group read business. Two chapters every week or so is easy. :)

Got a question...when we get to the group read for The Illearth War are we going to include Gilden Fire (did I spell that right? - Sorry).

I'd like to get a copy and read it when it fits into the story of TIW, but I don't know what the group wants.

let's start a new thread of questions to ask Donaldson

Post by Guest »

If anyone is ever lucky enough to see him at a reading or at a writer's conference or something. We should start a thread of questions that can't be resolved in the group reread. There's been one heckuva arguement brewing over the first two chapters over the state of the Covenant marriage before leprosy, for instance. And it can't be resolved from the text.
