Random observation: when Roger and Jeremiah shifted through space/time, they linked arms to form an arch over Linden. At the climax of TLD, though, Thomas Covenant and Jeremiah link arms with Linden when they form an arch. So they form not a single arch, but three of them. I can't honestly say for certain but the arching of these limbs seems like it might symbolize the Arch of Time (indeed, we might say that Jeremiah uses himself and his adoptive parents as materials to construct the new Arch from at this point).
We've been wondering at a description of how the world was remade. What if this was supposed to be part of the thing?
With arms raised...

Well, yea..uhhmm..see, back in the 1920's when the Surrealists movement took off, in the social circles it was decided that , due to the abuse Surrealists were getting, there should be a way to identify your self as a " Surrealist" without verbally letting all know..a way of showing another Surrealist, that you were of like mind. So, they got an idea from the American ex patriots streaming into the bohemian society of Paris at the time. They would identify themselves to other Surrealists by shaved armpits.."Aisselles nue..". Like the Americans the French Surrealists heavily suggested that their women be at the fore front of this change, with only a few of the males practicing the " nude armpit". So when at gatherings and meetings it was not unusual for some to always find a way or cause to raise the arms and show their affinity for the naked underarm. At one point there was even a popular dance that had first the females raise their arms , then the males, and then everyone hands clasped to whoever was beside one ,raising their arms in show of underarm unity..or not. Jango Rhinehardt's , " Essence de Nuits d'été " is believed to be a tip of the hat to the Surrealists of Paris
The majority of people had no idea. They were just out on the town, partying and that was one of the dances at the Paris club they saw and then imitated. So the Surrealist eventually abandoned the naked axilla and just asked, " fish?" to any behaving ..incongruently..A reply with any inkling of the surreal to it would be considered an affirmative. A popular and favorite one for awhile was, " the train left the yard because the meter was wrong." But thats another story that probably isn't true.
So, anyway Donaldson has the three raise their arms in unison ,,as a salute to the early surrealists of Paris, with Jeremiah being the only one possibly ,,giving the grand and magnificent " Aisselles Nue ! "

If she withdrew from exaltation, she would be forced to think- And every thought led to fear and contradictions; to dilemmas for which she was unprepared.

Wow, that is quite the story. Is this the origin of women shaving their underarms?? I wonder...lurch wrote:Well, yea..uhhmm..see, back in the 1920's when the Surrealists movement took off, in the social circles it was decided that , due to the abuse Surrealists were getting, there should be a way to identify your self as a " Surrealist" without verbally letting all know..a way of showing another Surrealist, that you were of like mind.
