The noisy stuff
As there's a 'The heavy stuff' thread, I thought I'd start one to cover the kind of music that some people might think of as noise. Maybe avant garde, music concrete, tape collages, guitar feedback, modular bleeps and bloops, etc.
Anyone into anything like that? It's kind of hard to explain to people what there is to like in something that is essentially dissonant noise with no discernible rhythm, but to me it's a pleasing experience.
Examples might be Ornette Coleman's 'Free Jazz', Pink Floyd's 'A Saucerful of Secrets', The Beatles 'Revolution 9', The Stooges 'L.A. Blues', etc.
Is it just noise? Is it music? Is it something of both?

Oh...he's a great player, one of the absolute best.michaelm wrote:. John McLaughlin's guitar playing on that album probably falls into what I was thinking of though
If that's [and saucer full of secrets] what you consider part of noisy, I'm on board for noisy.

I would say both fall at the more musical end of noisy though.Vraith wrote:Oh...he's a great player, one of the absolute best.michaelm wrote:. John McLaughlin's guitar playing on that album probably falls into what I was thinking of though

But agree that McLaughlin is an awesome player. Birds of Fire just sounds so messy on the surface, but it's far from random notes or anything like that.
For noise I was more thinking things like this:

Yea, familiar with that one and a couple others you mentioned initially...
but it's not something I have much knowledge about/exposure to...
just random bits...mostly occasional experiments/forays by bands who
aren't really committed to the "genre." [and most of which would also qualify for the "heavy" thread.]

Ornette Coleman made a hell of a noise sometimes:

This album is great though. Once in a while I have to listen to it loud in the car!

Do the punk rock bands like X and Social Distortion count? 'Cause I like them and have made it a point to see them both live.
Does an old-time album like Blue Cheer's Vincebus Eruptum fit in here? 'Cause that kind of noise stresses my speakers to the limit when I turn it up.
