The Sisters of Mercy

Post by Cail »

I've been a casual fan of theirs since the late '80s, but never really delved into them, nor have I given much thought to their lyrics (see The Def Leppard Lyrics Listening Strategy (DLLLS)). But recently I've been going backwards to find new music to listen to (since most modern music just doesn't do it for me), and I've rediscovered The Sisters. I think I'll do a full catalog review of their three-ish records at some point like I did with Rush, but for the moment I'll just drop a few videos here to whet your appetite (or for you to ignore, your choice).

With that out of the way, the thing I dig about these guys is the crazy jumping around they do stylistically. It's goth-ish, but it's also a completely satirical takedown of big-time rock. The band (really just Andrew Eldritch) both mocks and embraces '80s rock conventions......And the result is mesmerizing.

Anyway, stay tuned. The weather's warmed up and I can sit in the garage with a cocktail and a cigar and write again.

The singer sounds like Bowie. You should review Victor (awesome) and My Favorite Headache (Rush light) if you haven't already.

Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

Ironically, my copy of Floodland corroded, and I had to throw it away.
I've only ever heard Floodland, and always thought they were too similar in that album to Shriekback, who I preferred more. So I never paid them much mind. I do remember going to a dance club in the late 80's with Bossk and dancing to the 10 minute version of This Corrosion, and him barfing afterward from overdoing it.

This Corrosion indeed.
