In The Year Game - Part Deux

Post by ussusimiel »

I'm cribbing the idea from the thread Sorus bumped recently, except that for this game we'll use the current post count for the month. (The drawback of the other thread is that the number is so high now that all the events have to be set in the future.)

I'll kick off:

1980: 'Suicide is Painless' (Theme from M*A*S*H) was Number 1 in the UK for three weeks.

I could see that! However, it also had the drawback that it now changes so rarely that we would be stuck in the 3600's for ages.

We're back to the future now, but only for a couple of days!

2018: Donald Trump and Kanye West duke it out (literally, in a MMA/WWE ring) in the Presidential elections because Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders can no longer remember where the White House is!

Looks like the Romans were some of the first to see the benefits of male grooming

1122: The Concordat of Worms resolves the Investiture Controversy, thus bringing to an end the first phase of the power struggle between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Emperors. (I always thought that the Diet of Worms was a hilarious name )

1181: Chinese and Japanese astronomers observe what has since come to be understood as a supernova. One of only eight supernovae in the Milky Way observed in recorded history, it appears in the constellation Cassiopeia and is visible in the night sky for about 185 days. The radio source 3C58 is thought to be the remnant from this event.

The monthly post count is now at 1042!

In the year 1042, Emperor Michael V of the Byzantine Empire attempts to remain sole Emperor by sending his adoptive mother and co-ruler Zoe of Byzantium to a monastery. (What a warm-hearted guy, eh?)

1245: birth on January 16 – Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster, son of Henry III of England (d. 1296)

Between 1276 and 1284 he governed the counties of Champagne and Brie with his second wife, Blanche of Artois, in the name of her daughter Joan. His nickname, "Crouchback" (meaning "crossed-back"), refers to his participation in the Ninth Crusade.

(Interesting name, and interesting counties to govern, you'd likely end up with gout if you didn;t head off on a old Crusade or two!)

For some werd reason, the post count in statistics is claiming this is already February.. Very well, I'll play along (grumble, grumble).

In the year 28, King Daru of Baekje succeeds to the throne of Baekje in the Korean peninsula.
