I bought Season 3 the other day. A fantastic season!
-The Bumpy Road to Love 1st appearance of Eve!!!
-The Body in Question They find the frozen body of one of Napoleon's men.
-Burnin' Down the House Chris builds his Fling!
-Democracy in America There's an election for mayor, and Chris tells us how wonderful democracy is.
-Three Amigos "Bill Planey is dead."
-Wake-Up Call The incredible springtime episode where we first meet Leonard, Maggie falls in love with a bear, Shelly sheds her skin. (But I'm kinda livid that they changed the music that plays during the last scene, during and after Chris' reading of Edna St. Vincent Milay. Livid, I tell ya!!!)
-Our Wedding Adam & Eve get married! ROFL!!!!
-Cicely Joel meets a 108 year old man who tells them about the founding of Cicely.

I think I'll try to get the First Season for my birthday (Feb 16), but who knows what will happen? I might just buy Sanjuro instead!

AHHHHHH! I didn't see this!!! Thank you, thank you for bumping this for me.

I adore this show. There is nothing like it and I doubt there ever will be. I own the whole collection. The best thing about this show is there is no "star". It is a true definition of ensemble. Every episode is a story unto itself. I think every episode offers a life lesson, says something to the heart.

All the characters were so full and multi-dimensional.

Chris was always working on an art project and his words were always so beautiful. This cut always brings tears to my eyes.
Chris Stevens: Goethe's final words: "More light." Ever since we crawled out of that primordial slime, that's been our unifying cry: "More light." Sunlight. Torchlight. Candlight. Neon. Incandescent. Lights that banish the darkness from our caves, to illuminate our roads, the insides of our refrigerators. Big floods for the night games at Soldier's field. Little tiny flashlight for those books we read under the covers when we're supposed to be asleep. Light is more than watts and footcandles. Light is metaphor. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Lead, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom Lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home- Lead Thou me on! Arise, shine, for thy light has come. Light is knowledge. Light is life. Light is light.

Another really great episode was the one where the town receives a package with a huge amount of postal stamps from all over the world. Its arrival causes all kinds of speculation and uproar.
Spoiler
In the end they find out it is a box from a little boy who asks the receiver to put something important into the box and send it on its journey.
It was so poignant and would be so impossible in the post 9-11 era.

Ask me anything about any character in this show, I love talking about it.
Thank you, Fist, you so so made my evening.

Now I'm going to go begin the series again.

Wish they had the totem pole, especially Leonard and Chris talking about it. And Chris having a problem swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

It's also wonderful hearing Chris reading this, which I posted a page back:
When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny, almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of recollection.

Quote:

Chris Stevens: We all carry around so much pain in our hearts. Love and pain and beauty. They all seem to go together like one little tidy confusing package. It's a messy business, life. It's hard to figure - full of surprises. Some good. Some bad.

Chris Stevens: There's a dark side to each and every human soul. We wish we were Obi-Wan Kenobi, and for the most part we are, but there's a little Darth Vader in all of us. Thing is, this ain't no either-or proposition. We're talking about dialectics, the good and the bad merging into us. You can run but you can't hide. My experience? Face the darkness. Stare it down. Own it. As brother Nietzsche said, being human is a complicated gig. So give that ol' dark night of the soul a hug. Howl the eternal yes!

The episode -- I think it's called Fish Story -- in which Ruth Ann takes off with a biker gang. I get such a kick out of the whole gang.

I have 5 seasons, but haven't gotten to that episode yet. :-)

That was a great episode! One that I really loved was where the guys turn Dr. Flieshman onto hunting. He is so involved in hunting. Feels like a 'real man'. Until he shoots a bird and doesnt kill it. He spends the rest of the episode trying to save the bird. (I think it was a bird)

...Re Albi...

I've only seen one episode of this show, and the characters were well established in the one I saw. So I am sure everything flew over my head. But just the idea of an old military guy attempting to tell tales to young Asian couples as the northern lights kicked in still brings a giggle as I recall that scene...

Maurice Minnifield: You know that's the nature of a family holiday, to make a single man feel disenfranchised. You're made to feel like a hungry vagrant with your nose pressed up against a window staring at somebody else's dinner.

Marilyn Whirlwind: It's the same with white people. They cleared the forest, they dug up the land, and they gave us the flu. But they also brought power tools and penicillin and Ben and Jerry's ice cream.

Mike and I, we've been over what I'm supposed to say, and I've got to tell you, it's pretty persuasive stuff. But is it the whole truth? It's a slice of truth. A morsel. A fraction. It's a piece of the pie, certainly not the whole enchilada. And now that I've been thinking about it, I don't think I could tell the whole truth about anything. That's a pretty heavy burden, because we all just view the world through this little piece of coke bottle. Is there such a thing as objective truth? I wonder.
