I can't upload an avatar

Post by Khaliban »

It meets all the requirements, it's no different than previous avatars, but it won't upload.

Hmmm, I wonder if it's related to people not being able to upload pics to the album.

Do me a favour, host it somewhere else (photobucket or whatever) and link to it so I can download a copy, and I'll see if I can add it.

(Also, try re-uploading the previous one, see if that takes.)

If not, I will get hold of Vain.

Vain is looking into it. He's worried we've run out of server space.

Will update y'all when I know more.

I think I can link remotely.

But, that's a workaround and needs to be set up.

Someone, probably Vain, warned us about this awhile back. We must either trim the old, or travel to greener shores.

I guess not. The remote link didn't work either.

Something also seems to have reset your post count, though it doesn't look like anything is actually missing.

I think the remote link will work if you have a file ending in .jpg or such.

Uh, that might have been me. :D It should be fixed now. (The post count I mean.) Lemme know if that looks right. Sorry.

Yeah, you need a direct link to an image, so you could host it on some image hosting site like photobucket (but not them) and put the direct url in that field. It might work.

In talks with Vain to see what we can do...

I can link, but I can't save. That would make sense if the server is full.

It's not a terrible idea. I wouldn't make it mandatory, but guessing that a server upgrade/more server space will cost something, and I'd be willing to make a contribution.

Ditto Sorus .. and why not .. we get to enjoy the site. Vain has still a family at home and doesnt get to pop in so much these days .. so why should that cost be his alone.

I reckon that voluntary contributions are likely the way to go .. but I wouldnt oppose a membership fee. You have to pay a nominal fee for most clubs etc these days.

It's come up before, and Jay and Co. have always said it isn't necessary, but I'll just throw it out there that every WoW guild I have belonged to has accepted donations to help pay for their website and VOIP server. There's usually a link on the page that lets you pay for a month or whatnot. It's completely voluntary, and folks are good at keeping it going - our guild website is paid up for the better part of the year even though most folks use FB these days.

I didn't have any particular desire to change my avatar, but now that I know I can't, it's bugging me.

Out of curiosity, are we in danger of a text limit?

No danger. :) Vain has asked the hosts to increase the server size limit, but it may take a couple of days. Will let you know as soon as he confirms it's done, should sort out the uploading issue.

Sky, linking like that tells the forum to look somewhere else for the image...it's stored off-site at the location of the URL, and not on our server.

My guess is that linking to an off-site avatar actually makes a copy of it on our server, which is probably why it doesn't work.

Anyway, hopefully this will tide us over until we make a plan for a new hosting server.

Our plan is that KW will always be free to users. I'd also prefer not to have to solicit donations either, so let's not worry about that unless it becomes absolutely necessary. :)
