I Drove Out From the Sandhills

" like the waiting of things,
with this ring. hollow from
the guilty, there is no sorrow
."

I drove out from the Sandhills.
the sun went dawn in orange
August smoke. as seen in the
screen of a dead television set.

treading in water, all caught
up in their own bad poetry.
I want to swim in the sea of
Tranquility. hot orange moon.

shiny satellite caught in be -
tween, vapor lock. nomadic
fish. a strange current will
carry us. someplace beside
the well. anywhere but Utah.

breathe out - breathe in. peculiar
oil that poisons me. so, I am a
case. so, I am a caution. so I am
left in the pocket of a dead man.

but that honor is not my honor.
a low obedience for a clever line.
a low summer fog cloaked the
valley. can even death lose a life?
