Problem with Preview

Post by Damelon »

I was trying to check a post on Preview and none of the post I had written was visible there. Only my signature.

I'm on my Windows desktop, using Chrome.

That's an issue I've had come and go. On Firefox I can sometimes switch off of the write a post screen and back without losing anything, and then preview will work. But not always. I always copy what I wrote first before trying that, just in case.

I'm mostly in the habit now of posting and using edit when that happens. It's a PITA, but it gets the post done.

This is usually caused by special characters in the attempted post. Often this is as subtle as "smart quotes" or an em dash in a cut-and-paste, since many word processors and online sources automatically use these.

See the 406 thread here in Announcements for a more in-depth discussion.

One of the better solutions when this happens is to run the text of the post through a tool that changes the unacceptable characters to their standard ASCII equivalents.

Yeah, I think it will now tolerate the characters in posts, but not if you try preview it...

FWIW, posts with diacritics can be successfully previewed as a Private Message.

As to why that is, beats me.

Thanks SD. I'm familiar with that site. I have to use it when I post, like now, on my iPad. Something like that has never happened for me while posting from my desk top though.

This site is like a car with 200,000 miles. Does weird things from time to time and I have to figure out what is going on under the hood.

Every time it happens, I click the Back button and hope everything I typed in is still there! It always is. But I always worry.

We used to get a 406 error. Not we get a blank post. I am not sure what changed - it's not like phpBB2 is getting updates.
