Who is Despite?

Post by thewormoftheworld'send »

I went into a deep trance. When I came out of it, I realized that the word/title/name "Despite" as used by SRD was coined by him.

I'm not familiar with the term despite as a real word. Is it pronounced Des'-pit?

It's pronounced the same, whether you say "I replied, despite my misgivings," or "You cannot defeat Despite with rage."

də · spīt

da SPITE

I was not familiar with the word upon my first reading either, or at least that particular meaning of it, but i caught on right away. It's close enough to "spite" to not make much difference.

It's the root of the word "despicable", if that helps.

As Wayfriend has posted, the word, as a noun, has an archaic meaning of "contempt, scorn". See:

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dicti ... sh/despite

Donaldson imports a lot of archaic English into the Chronicles, such as "roynish".
