Poll for Lord Foul's Bane Chapters One and Two

Post by duchess of malfi »

There was quite a controversy on the state of Tom and Joan Covenant's marriage before he got sick. I thought I would run a poll on it (if I can figure out how to make the poll work). I do ask that you make only brief replies here, save loooooooong arguements for the proper thread! :D Thanks!
Love as thou wilt.

No marriage where one partner makes all of the decisions can be healthy.

I know the song, Danlo, but could you elaborate please? I heard an interview with Bowie and he said that that song was a compliation of all his other hit songs.

Anyway, I agree with Vain.

Covenant seemed very happy with his marrage. Joan, on the other hand, seemed only interested in the next best thing.-jay

Ashes To Ashes - The Song

Words by David Bowie.

Lyrics
Do you remember a guy that's been
In such an early song
I've heard a rumour from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true

They got a message from the Action Man
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too
I've loved all I've needed to love
Sordid details following"

The shrieking of nothing is killing me
Just pictures of Jap girls in synthesis and I
Ain't got no money and I ain't got no head
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing

CHORUS
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low

Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following
Oh no, not again
I'm stuck with a valuable friend
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too"
One flash of light but no smoking pistol

I never done good things
I never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue, woh-o-oh
Need an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now

CHORUS

REPEAT
My mother said to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom

Song found on Sound & Vision and Changes Too
fall far and well Pilots!

Tom was happy. Joan the control freak had found the perfect partner and was almost as happy. At least, that is how this whole hazy affair came across to me.

Yes that's it xactly--that's the irony and sarcasm I always hear in the song when Bowie sings "I'm happy, hope you're happy too". I don't think Joan was totally happy--some people, like the Horse Whisperer character (who's name was Tom oddly enuf), have unlimited patience. While Joan may have had it with horses I think TC's procastination on his 2nd book was on the verge of doing her in, so she concentrated on Roger hoping "this 2 shall pass".

Please, do some of you actually think that Joan wasn't happy? The whole reason why Joan was the way she was in the second chronilces is her guilt of leaving Thomas. She rings in the Illearth War, saying "I miss you, I feel lonely, I need you." Yeah that really sounds like a women who's just got out of a happy marriage.

I believe they were both happy. That their happiness wasn't as enduring as they believed it to be at the time doesn't change that they were happy then.
