Gabba Gabba Hey! Ramones Rule

I dug the Ramones from the moment I watched Rock and Roll High School the first time. The film featured the band and they actually had a speaking part. "Things sure have changed since we were kicked out of high school." The first song I learned to play was Blitzkrieg Bop. I remember making a tape where I had recorded Teenage Labotomy over and over 8 or 10 times. The Ramones have and will probably always be one of my favorite bands of all time. Not because of their sophistication or elaborate compositions but because of their raw, misfit, I don't give a crap appeal. When Joey died in '01 my hope of ever seeing them perform live went up in smoke. :-(

Ramones kick ass.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I saw the Ramones in '96 at Lollapalooza. One th of teh artists didn't show, so the Ramones played a double set. I don't really dig them that much, but you've gotta repsect them for steppin' up.

The KKK Took My Baby Away
Pet Semetary
Beat on the Brat

So I was watching Antiques Roadshow (New York) today, and some woman had a bunch of Ramones stuff. Dee Dee Ramones jacket (signed), a notebook of original and unpublished lyrics, and other things. Only worth a measly 12,000.

The Ramones were the original punk band, and unlike most others they kept going for some 25 years. They created the sound that became the standard definition of punk - loud, fast, stripped-down power-chord rock with catchy tunes.

Some other cool songs by them, apart from the ones already mentioned (and this is just off the top of my head):

53rd & 3rd
Glad to See You Go
Suzy Is a Headbanger
Carbona Not Glue
Babysitter
We're a Happy Family
Why Is It Always This Way?
I Want You Around
Don't Come Close
I'm Against It
Questioningly
Bad Brain
All the Way
Psycho Therapy
Every Time I Eat Vegetables It Makes Me Think of You
Wart Hog
Bonzo Goes to Bitburg
Crummy Stuff
Censorshit
Scattergun

As for albums, I'd particularly recommend their first four: The Ramones, The Ramones Leave Home, Rocket to Russia and Road to Ruin - virtually every song on each of these is terrific (and those few that aren't are over very quickly :) ). The later albums are more uneven, but every one of them has at least one classic song on it. (IMO, the late 80's albums, Halfway to sanity and Brain drain are their weakest, but even they have some good songs. Things picked up again in the 90's and their last three studio albums were all pretty good.)

This is the sort of thing that really elevates my opinion of an artist, even if I'm not a big fan of their work.
