Name Coincidence? ** Spoiler **

Post by shammer »

I've been lurking on the Watch for quite some time, but I just finished Runes and immediately noticed something that I haven't seen any remarks about yet.
Spoiler
What's Anele's name spelled backwards?

I brought that up a long time ago and no one really took an interest in it. For a lot of the book I thought Anele was Covenant due to that spelling oddity. Maybe something will come of it later on?

That's pretty cool - I didn't notice that. Not sure of the significance at this point.

What about this - what's the difference between Amy Clint, the nurse who gave Joan a taste of blood, and Sara Clint, the nurse murdered by Roger?

I didn't think of that...I've been trying to think about him in terms of the dictionary definition of his name. He certainly seems to be a man in need of his namesake! He also seems too broken to be capable of Elena's mistakes...

I'm not sure what you're getting at. "What's the difference" how?

Don't you think it's unusual for two fictionalized characters to have the same last name with no explanation given?

Amy Clint and Sara Clint - are they related? sisters? sisters-in-law? mother and daughter? Same person and SRD screwed up their names? What's the deal?

An explanation was given. They're sisters.

I noticed it, almost right away.

The "internal" connection as I see it is this: both characters had and lost the Staff of Law, with dire consequences for the Land.

The "external" explanation IMO is that Donaldson is making a bit of an inside joke for the fans.

Can someone post the explanation of the Clints being sisters?

I recall a Mr. Clint being Sarah's husband which makes Amy a likely daughter.

RE: The Clint sisters

I just started re-reading Runes today, and I've noticed a gaff made by the author, and missed by the editor, and/or copy editor (and by myself the first two times I've read Runes)

Sara and Amy are both Nurses, and sisters. When Linden is at home trying to figure out who is working tonight, she remembers that it's Sara Clint, Amy's sister.

The gaff, is that when we're introduced to Amy, she is called Ms. Clint; Later at the Hospital/crime scene, Sara is referred to as Mrs. Clint; and that she's married with two daughters.

How can two sister's, one of whom is married, keep the same last name?

SARA should also be Ms. Clint; if she kept her maiden name.

Not a big blunder, but there you go...

A woman need not change her surname when getting married...well, not anymore, that is. It is convention, not a legal requirement.

I had recognized that "Anele" was "Elena" spelled backward but didn't think anything of it. A *thumbs up* to King Elessar 8 for putting the two characters together as "those who have lost a Staff of Law".

I seem to remember that SRD said that the Elena/Anele thing was a totally unplanned coincidence. Those with better memories than mine can chime in...

He does mention it:
SRD wrote:Martin Bennett: I haven't yet completed reading Runes, so my answer may come within the pages of the book, but just in case:

Anele | elenA

Is this something to do with the corruption of Time? Both possessed Staffs (staves?), and both lost them. Both were involved in breakages of Law, although not with equal culpability.

What I am trying to say is - is the naming of Anele as the reverse of Elena a coincidence?

Martin Bennett

Yes, it's just a coincidence. I didn't notice the Elena/Anele spelling until a friend pointed out to me--too late for me to do anything about it. Sometimes these things just happen.

(11/08/2004)
Still, it seems a bit too much of a coincidence to me... :shifty:
