The Creator and Despite - First Chronicle metaphors

Post by I'm Murrin »

I've always liked the Foul/Creator story for its hidden truths. The story goes that the Creator was making the world, intending it to be a place of peace and beauty. However, unbeknownst to him, Despite was at work, either within himself or at his side, poisoning all that he wrought, placing great banes in the earth; twisting parts of his creation malign. After forging the Arch, to seal this world within Time, the Creator looked... and saw what had been done. He realised what had occured, and in his rage tore this Despite from within himself and cast it down into his creation, to be imprisoned for an eternity. Eventually, Thomas Covenant entered the Land, the Creator's champion, summoned to finally rid the world of Despite.

Now: the inside theory. Thomas Covenant, leper, abandoned, without hope. Though he denied it, pushed it away with his leper's caution; his VSE; his mental barriers, Thomas Covenant was drowning. Behind his mental armour his mind was being overcome by self-despite. Unaided, unheeded, it would have pulled him down towards a leper's end. But somehow, subconsciously, Covenant saw what was happening within himself, saw his every action tainted with self-despite. On the day he walked into town to pay his bill, it was finally becoming too much - when the police car sped toward him and he believed it was about to strike, his mind fled within itself. In the dream it fled to, the part of him that hated, the part that was capable of despite, was cast out; externalised - became Lord Foul. The world which he created within himself - his mind, the battleground, where he would face down this part of himself, and find a way to be free of it. And in this place, this world he had created unaware, a part of himself told a story - of a Creator who saw Despite within himself, and cast it out so that it, one day, could be defeated.

I Just made a thread that pertains to this topic. It's a theory I came up with in the shower this morning as to the origin of this story.
