The Dead in Andelain

Post by Akasri »

In the 2nd trilogy, Covenant and Avery meet their dead in Andelain. It is speculated (by TC I think) that the Giants didn't see their dead since they were from outside the Land, but TC and LA are from outside the Land as well. Why do they see their dead and the Giants do not see theirs?

Because Covenant has "dead" in the Land. All the people he encountered on his first summoning. Linden doesn't see "her" dead, she sees dead Kevin. And it was dead Kevin's choice to appear to her.

Your companion would draw grim shades here. And grim he was...

Since the Giants knew no one in The Land in life, they would not have dead in Andelian.

How come Kevin was wrong? Why did he not want TC to give the despiser the ring, when Mhoram and Elena knew it, and were okay with it?

Kevin was insane. All he could see was that Covenant was going to put the ring into the Depiser's hand. And that infuriated him. He saw another desecration, one that would destroy the whole universe, and that is ALL he saw. He could not logic thru Covenant's purpose at all. He was mad.

Do the dead not learn?

Post by Sunbaneglasses »

The fact that the dead in TCTC do not seem more enlightened has always intrigued me.Also the fact that they were able to be controlled/possed by foul by way of the power of the illearth stone.According to our archotypes the dead should be more enlightened, dead Elena still calling Covenant "Beloved"?I don't get that, dead Kevin not wanting Covenant to follow thrue with his plan to give Foul the ring?Surely Elenas spirit would be privy to all the pain that Covenents rape of Lena had caused so many people, not to mention the fact that he was indeed her father, and why was'nt dead Kevin privy to the enlightenment that Mhoram and Elena had concerning Covenants intent?I just think it is interesting that the dead retain so much of the nature and personality of their living selves. It all intrigues me and I think it will come into play in the third crons.

I've always thought that Kevin appeared to Linden because in some way he resembled L's father a lot, and that's what the "draw grim shades" was referring to. I wonder who would appear in place of her mother.

A new Question:

Post by drew »

I thought instead of making a new thread, I'd just bump this one up, cause my question runs along the same lines:

Is the Law of Death for the whole World broken?
Or is it just the Land?

It would seem like the whole world, so is Andelain the only place they can appear?

I wonder if after the breaking of the Law of Death...and then the LOL; if around the world, people started noticing apparations of lost loves.

I never imagined Kevin as mad in life.
He desacrated, but i always thought that was dispear, IMHO, mad seems like he would have done it anyway, with or without the need.
I always though he lost his mind after death. He would spend etetnity thinking how he had lost to Foul and how he had destoyed all that he loved, then he is called from his grave, by Elena, and lost to Foul once more. The Law of Death is Broken and again he has a part in destoying part of the Land.

Its enough to turn many people mad, but IMHO it all happened after death.
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

Perhaps not insane, but 'blinded by despair'.

Drew: Interesting idea. Since the dead in Andelain are only those who lived in the Land, you would expect the dead from other parts of the world to appear elsewhere - unless it is that natural Earthpowerfulness of the Land that makes it unique.
