Pearl Jam - Black

Hey... oooh...

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore

And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head, I'm spinning, oh,
I'm spinning, how quick the sun can drop away

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be... yeah...

Uh huh... uh huh... ooh...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

Aah... uuh..

Too doo doo too, too doo doo [many times until fade]

mixtape

You say hello, inside I'm screaming I love you
You say goodnight, in my mind
I'm sleeping next to you
You drive away from my car crash of a heart
And I don't know

But you gave me the best mixtape I have
And even all the bad songs ain't so bad
I just wish there was so much more than that
About me and you

You talk to him, and it burns me like the sun
You talk to her, and you say that you feel like he's the one
I talk to me, but you can't hear the pain I feel
You don't know

Cause you gave me the best mixtape I have
And even all the sad songs ain't so sad
I only wish that there was more than that
About me and you

Oh, don't turn around and say bye again
Yeah it crushes my head when you call me
Your friend and I'm not the same person
From back in the day in the back of the class
That you thought was gay
No I can't find the words cause I lost them
The minute they fell out of my mouth
And it's love and I'm in it, so give me your lips
And just let me kiss 'em
And let's get messed up and listen to probably...

The best mixtape I have
And even all the bad songs ain't so bad
I just wish there was so much more than that
About me and you
About me and you
About me and you
About me and you
About me and you
About me and you

Switchblade symphony - dirty dog
Keep a line for you
Keep a line for you
Get it all, waterfall
Wash it off of me
What do you think, little man
You could do to me?
And I'm feeling like I'm moving
I am flying, tonight
I am smiling, I am gliding,
And I'm feeling all right
Won't she wise up,
Stop going out and in?
Won't she wise up,
Stop going out and in?
Keep a line for you
Keep a line for you
What a way
A little fly
Can land on everything
Dirty ways
Sick and small
He is the insect king
And I'm feeling like I'm moving
I am flying, tonight
I am smiling, I am gliding,
And I'm feeling all right
Won't she wise up,
Stop going out and in?
Won't she wise up,
Stop going out and in?
Won't she wise up,
Stop going out and in?
Won't she wise up,
Stop going out and in?
Monsters, they eat
Your kind of meat
And they're moving as far as they can
And as fast as they can

Hank & Fred - Loudon Wainwright III

On my way Thursday from the Y I heard it in the car

Bob Edwards broke the news tonight yes he of NPR

Driving through Montgomery I hung my head and cried

then visited Hank Williams grave the day Fred Rodgers died.

Zelda Sayre, F. Scott Fitzgerald lived somewhere in this old town

Nat King Cole was born here Rosa Parks stayed sitting down

Black And white death booze and music genius courage kindness pride

I felt them all around me there the day Fred Rodgers died

And we mocked King Friday the thirteenth on Saturday Night Live

But once I started crying it was pretty hard to drive

On New Year's day Hank slipped away slumped over in the back

oh I hope he had his cardigan on in that Cadillac

When you look out from the hilltops you can see Confederate graves

And the railroad runs by the river it carries cotton, soldiers, slaves

Hank's real name was Hiram we all could feel his pain

And Fred McFeely Rodgers knew how to talk to a train

And we mocked King Friday the thirteenth on Saturday Night Live

But once I started crying it was pretty hard to drive

Driving through Montgomery I hung my head and cried

then visited Hank Williams grave the day Fred Rodgers died.

I visited Hank Williams grave when Mr. Rodgers died.

Nature and organisation - bloodstreamruns a side project of current 93
As I descended with the Dogs Blood Rising, so then I ascended to the Thunder Perfect Mind. Great grey bloodspeckled slabs of slate have fallen - this is my vision in the croaking jeering world: All idiotic faces and swollen hearts; in the papers the faces are not real, in the world the faces are not real - but in the Heart of the Hearts the Face is real. The dead die abroad, the crows fly, the wolves fly, and four poorly painted cardboard horsemen sheet over the back of the winds.
They are not legion - but closed.

God walked on Earth in those days. Now, still, in my Hearts He walks still.

In the green fields far away there is a solid tree (mother and the Sign she makes). On the brokenhorse zodiac signs, yellow face passes (All the Rainbow her arms were...). All books piled up in dirty heaps, craterlike surface, pitted - Oh, bellissima - Largherana - if the seahorse was golden, colden... and talking back the bloody streams of God's own Pain: "Why should we have compassion for others, when God Himself has had no pity... on others?" "Take back the bloodspeech", she said to me... Certain colours came from her body; she is alone!

God walked on Earth in those days. Now, still, in my Hearts He walks still.

And the brokenface of this horizoned world is covered by crystalcross ice. And the brokenface of this horizoned world is covered by crystalcross ice... when this whole wide eyeless world sighs, this eyeless world sighs...

All the stars are souls each single planet is the lifeflame of the nothingy eternally spark. I cannot believe despite the evidence of one Godeye and one pooreye that this world is God's own bloodred grassgreen blueblack skypied Paradise. When I lay in the arms of one woman I said to her silent: "You will be forever mine though You go as You shall though You diediedie. Sleep as You shall die I shall love You always between Your bodies. I pray that I shall be forever Thine. If I say to You Love then Listen You should be crowned above all."

God walked on Earth in those days. Now still, in my Hearts He walks still.
Monsters, they eat
Your kind of meat
And they're moving as far as they can
And as fast as they can

husker du - turn it around

Several times I've tried Everything to make you feel alright (Turn it around) Is anything working? (Turn it around)
Several times I've died insideAnd then I see you get uptight(Turn it around)We gotta get back(Turn it around)
Well, I've got time on my side(Turn it around)And you've got time on your side(Turn it around)Now it's only time to decideWhich side you're on
We've tried everything in sight(Turn it around)To make it turn out all right(Turn it around)
Now is the only timeNow is the only timeNow it's timeTo try to turn it around
Several times I've wishedThat everything would slip into a void(Turn it around) Does it even matter now?(Turn it around)
It's time to figure outThe things we want and things that we'll avoid(Turn it around)We gotta get back(Turn it around)
Well, I don't grab for straws anymore(Turn it around)And you don't sink your claws anymore(Turn it around)But the more I think The less I really know about myself
We gotta turn it around(Turn it around)Before it goes into the ground(Turn it around)
Now is the only timeNow is the only timeNow it's timeTo try to turn it around
Several timesTried to turn it aroundSeveral waysTried to turn it around
Turn it aroundTurn it around Turn it aroundTurn it around
Turn it aroundTurn it around Turn it aroundTurn it around
Several morals and there's several playsSeveral parts that anyone can try(Turn it around)It's enough to make you cry(Turn it around)
I may not think that I'm rightBut I know the things I've gotAre gonna turn out alright(Turn it around) We gotta get back, turn it around (Turn it around)
Well, I may not be anything(Turn it around)And you might be the biggest thing(Turn it around)The biggest thing to meIs making this thing work for life
We gotta turn it around(Turn it around)Before it goes into the ground(Turn it around)
Now is the only timeNow is the only timeNow it's timeTo try to turn it around

I forget how much I like this tune and it's message until it comes up on my playlist.

Love is the Answer
Utopia

Name your price and take it to paradise
I can't stay here any more
And I've looked high and low
I've been from shore to shore to shore
If there's a short cut, I'd have found it
But there's no easy way around it

Light of the world, shine on me Love is the answer
Shine on us all, set us free
Love is the answer

Who knows why someday we all must die
We're all homeless boys and girls
And we are never heard
It's such a lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely world
People turn their heads and walk on by
Tell me, is it worth just another try?

Light of the world, shine on me
Love is the answer
Let it shine, shine on us all, set us free
Love is the answerI know the answer is love

Tell me, are we alive or just a dying planet?
What are the chances?
Ask the man in your heart for the answers

And when you feel afraid(Love one another)
When you've lost your way(Love one another)
When you're all alone(Love one another)
When you're far from home(Love one another)
When you're down and out(Love one another)
All your hope's run out(Love one another)
When you need a friend(Love one another)
When you're near the end, love
We got to love, we got to love one another
Light of the world, you got to shine
Love will be a means, yeah, yeah, yeah
Shine on us all
Know that love can save the day
Just give it just one more chance
Love, love, love, love, ooh
Lord, you just can't let it stop, Lord
Love is the answer
Love is the answer
Love is the answer
Love is the answer, yeah
Got to live free to let love into your life

julian cope - safe surfer

& I saw my old man exploding out of a tunnel
I knew what came next
Recognized that cool sea that brought the downfall of the distant gaze
Distant gaze welcoming a son of Clovius Hoofus
Just another sheep boy
Duck call
Swan song
Idiot song of Donkey Kong
& I say:

You don't have to be afraid love
'Cause I'm a safesurfer, darling.

Oh wow! Songs to add to my playlist!

Leonard Cohen's The Captain. Dull though the music is, I appreciate the lyrics.

Now the Captain called me to his bed
He fumbled for my hand
"Take these silver bars," he said
"I'm giving you command."
"Command of what, there's no one here
There's only you and me --
All the rest are dead or in retreat
Or with the enemy."
"Complain, complain, that's all you've done
Ever since we lost
If it's not the Crucifixion
Then it's the Holocaust."
"May Christ have mercy on your soul
For making such a joke
Amid these hearts that burn like coal
And the flesh that rose like smoke."

"I know that you have suffered, lad,
But suffer this awhile:
Whatever makes a soldier sad
Will make a killer smile."
"I'm leaving, Captain, I must go
There's blood upon your hand
But tell me, Captain, if you know
Of a decent place to stand."

"There is no decent place to stand
In a massacre;
But if a woman take your hand
Go and stand with her."
"I left a wife in Tennessee
And a baby in Saigon --
I risked my life, but not to hear
Some country-western song."

"Ah but if you cannot raise your love
To a very high degree,
Then you're just the man I've been thinking of --
So come and stand with me."
"Your standing days are done," I cried,
"You'll rally me no more.
I don't even know what side
We fought on, or what for."

"I'm on the side that's always lost
Against the side of Heaven
I'm on the side of Snake-eyes tossed
Against the side of Seven.
And I've read the Bill of Human Rights
And some of it was true
But there wasn't any burden left
So I'm laying it on you."

Now the Captain he was dying
But the Captain wasn't hurt
The silver bars were in my hand
I pinned them to my shirt.
On the internet, no one can see your evil smirk.

Kasey Chambers

"The Captain"

Well I don't have as many friends because
I'm not as pretty as I was
I've kicked myself at times because I've lied
So I will have to learn to stand my ground
I'll tell 'em I won't be around
I'll move on over to your town and hide

And you be the Captain
And I'll be no-one
And you can carry me away if you want to
And you can lay low
Just like your father and if
I tread upon your feet you just say so
'Cos you're The Captain, I am no-one,
I tend to feel as though I owe one to you

Well I have handed all my efforts in
I searched here for my second wind
Is there somewhere here to let me in I asked
So I slammed the doors they slammed at me
I found the place I'm meant to be
I figured out my destiny at last

Did I forget to thank you for the ride
I hadn't tried I tend to runaway and hide

Are there any better lyrics than this?

Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
Bows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

Oh but now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From WIN and LOSE and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

thanks to gravity - Infinity Christmas

look...look at me just for a second
look at me just for an hour
look at the way i'm asking
look at the way i...
fall...fall with me just for the morning
fall with me just for the dusk
fall with me while i wonder about
the way your voice says remember

pray...pray with me just for a moment
pray with me just for a breath
pray with me while the afternoon is coming
the moon will...
lift...lift while you hear it's sound inside you
lift while you hear it's asking lonely cry
and tread..and how to say...song

the place where we stood...is still there
we just have to find it
the place where we walked...is still there
we just have to feel it
the place...where we stood...
and breathed and kissed...so long ago
that's the place
that i will bring you flowers
the place where i will

wait...wait with me just for a minute
wait while i swallow my wine
wait with me here forever
wait with me...
stay...stay stay with me just for a moment...
stay with me just for a day
stay with me forever
stay with me forever
stay with me forever...

Great lyrics, great tune. And if like me, you allow your imagination free reign sometimes only to find yourself in those situations of know-it-all'ness - which of course is the illusion - then this song is the perfect remedy.

Joni is one of my favorite artists and lyricists. (sp?)

Just don't call her the female Bob Dylan! <grin>

From father to son, the blood runs thin
Ooh, see faces frozen still against the wind
The seam is split, the cold face cracked
The lines are long, there's no going back
Through hands of steel and heart of stone
Our labor day has come and gone

And you leave me holdin' on
In Red Hill Town, see lights go down
I'm hangin' on, you're all that's left to hold on to
I'm still waiting, I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to

The glass is cut, the bottle run dry
Our love runs cold in the caverns of the night
We're wounded by fear, injured in doubt
I can lose myself, you, I can't live without

Yeah, you keep me holdin' on
In Red Hill Town, see the lights go down on
I'm hangin' on, you're all that's left to hold on to
I'm still waiting, hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to, on to

We'll scorch the earth, set fire to the sky
We stoop so low, to reach so high
A link is lost, the chain undone
We wait all day for night to come
And it comes like a hunted child

I'm hangin' on
you're all that's left to hold on to
I'm still waiting,
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to

Love, slowly stripped away
Love, has seen its better day
Hangin' on
Let's go out on Red Hill
Let's go down on Red Hill
Let's go down on Red Hill Town
Let's go down on Red Hill

From the time we are born, the time we're alive
Waiting for our story to start
We practice all day, we practice all night
But we're waiting for our story to start

Then we're taught what is true, we're taught what is right
We're taught not to follow our heart
And then, the next thing we know, we're trapped in a place
Where the story will never start

On this trip we all bend; we bend and we break
We break all our pacts with ourselves
We merely try to survive and we drop all our goals
And put our dreams all on our shelves

And we're told our new goals, we're told our new dreams
They're nothing like the dreams we once held
And now to follow our dreams we have to buy all this crap
Fulfill the dreams of someone else

But don't let 'em check you, they're sucking the wrong brew
The cowards should not steer your life by their own fear
Care what you are dreaming; the future is teeming
With stories that want to start

From the time we are born, the time of the life
Waiting for our story to start
We practice all day, we practice all night
But we're waiting for our story to start

Then we're taught what is true, we're taught what is right
We're taught not to follow our heart
And then, the next thing we know, we're trapped in a place
Where the story will never start

Don't let 'em check you, they're sucking the wrong brew
The cowards should not steer your life by their own fear
Care what you are dreaming; the future is teeming
With stories that wait to start

Don't let 'em check you, they're sucking the wrong brew
The cowards should not steer your life by their own fear
Care what you are dreaming; the future is teeming
With stories that wait to start

Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing
Is there no world for tomorrow, if we wait for today?

Best of all possible worlds
(Kris Kristofferson)

I was runnin' through the summer rain tryin' to catch the evenin' train
And kill that old familiar pain weavin' through my tangled brain
When I tipped my bottle back I smacked into a cop I didn't see

That policeman said, "Mr. Cool if you ain't drunk then you're a fool"
I said, "If that's against the law tell me why I never saw
A man locked in that jail of yours who wasn't just as lowdown poor as me"

Well that was when someone turned out the lights
And I wound up in jail to spend the night
And dream of all the wine and lonely girls
In this best of all possible worlds

Well I woke up next morning feelin' like my head was gone
And like my thick old tongue was lickin' somethin' sick and wrong
And I told that man I'd sell my soul if somethin' wet and cold is that old cell
That kindly jailer grinned at me all eaten up with sympathy
Then bought himself another beer and came and whispered in my ear
"That booze was just a dime a bottle boy you couldn't even buy the smell"

I said, "I knew there was somethin' I liked about this town
But it takes more than that to bring me down, down, down
'Cause there's still a lot of wine and lonely girls
In this best of all possible worlds"

Well they finally came and told me they was a gonna set me free
And I'd be leavin' town if I knew what was good for me
I said, "It's nice to learn that everybody's so concerned about my health"

I said, "I won't be leavin' no more quicker than I can
'Cause I've enjoyed about this much of this as I can stand
And I don't need this town of yours more
Than I've never needed nothing else"

'Cause there's still a lotta drinks that I ain't drunk
Lots of pretty thoughts that I ain't thought oh yeah
Lord there's still so many lonely girls
In this best of all possible worlds
Functionless art is vandalism. I am the vandal.

Bob Mould - Compositions for the Young and Old

Found a book of interest the other day
Compositions for the young and old to sing
Poems written many years ago
They told of family and hope and other things
Put together in the old days
When fifteen cents, it was a buck
That's when five would get you ten
Before it took you eight just to get you one
Some people, they don't care when they're down on their luck

Cheap thrills are awful hard to find these days
No one is amused for free
Someone's pulling on your mama's apron strings
You'd better run and see who it is

Playing cards with your neighbors on the back porch
Singing with an old beat-up guitar
Going to the local swimming hole
Until they closed it down, now there's nowhere to go

Things used to be so simple, long time ago
Now everything is so expensive and complicated
I hear you need a license for just about anything

Used to be that a handshake was a man's word
Now we settle arguments in court
No one trusts anyone's intentions anymore

Rummaging through the attic when I'm home
It brings back those memories to me
I'd amuse myself when I was small
When I was younger, the simplest things would do
Now I'm on everybody's mailing list
For things I can't afford to buy
I hear the weatherman
He says "It looks like rain for a while"
I guess I'll have to stay inside
Make peanut butter sandwiches and cry
Lenin, Marx
Marx, Lennon
Good Dog...
