Post by duchess of malfi »

I thought a place where we could dedicate songs to other people would be good. :)

I would like to start it off, in fact. :)

I've been having a rough patch in my life since the winter holidays, and someone here has been goodness itself to me through the whole situation, always with an ear and a cyber hug whenever I need them. Image

So Fist and Faith, dear friend Eric, this is for you:
You've Got A Friend
Song info: Words and music by: Carol King
Lyrics: When you're down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend
Love as thou wilt.

Fist and Danlo and others here have been good for my wife. Great people, all of them. 8)

Speaking of Duchess, this is for her:
Thank you Lyrics

If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.
I'd rather be in California...

And right back at you:
Alanis Morissette - Head Over Feet Lyrics
I had no choice but to hear you
You stated your case time and again
I thought about it

You treat me like I'm a princess
I'm not used to liking that
You ask how my day was

You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole
You're so much braver than I gave you credit for
That's not lip service

You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
Thanks for your patience
You're the best listener that I've ever met
You're my best friend
Best friend with benefits
What took me so long

I've never felt this healthy before
I've never wanted something rational
I am aware now
I am aware now

You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault
Love as thou wilt.

For myself, Plissken, Sheriff Lytton, Dennis, Brinn, Jemcheeta and the rest of the strong-willed folks in the Think Tank, a little Don Henly...
Woke up with a heavy head
And I thought about leavin’ town
I could have died if I wanted to-
Slipped over the edge and drowned
But, oh no baby, I won’t give up so easy
Too many tire tracks in the sands of time
Too many love affairs that stop on a dime
I think it’s time to make some changes ’round here
Yeah, I’m gonna tear it up
Gonna trash it up
I’m gonna round it up
Gonna shake it up
Oh, no, baby, I will not lie down
I’m brave enough to be crazy
I’m strong enough to be weak
I see all these heroes with feet of clay
Whose mighty ships have sprung a leak
And I want you to tell me darlin’
Just what do you believe in now?
Well, c’mon over here baby
You ’bout to gimme a heart attack
I wanna wrap my lovin’ arms
Around the small of your back
Yeah, and I’m gonna pull you, pull you, pull you
Pull you right up close to me
Yeah we’re gonna tear it up
We gonna trash it up
Gonna round it up
Gonna shake it up
Oh, no no no, I will not lie down
Turn this thing around
I will not go quietly
I will not lie down
I will not go quietly
I will not lie down
I will not go quietly
I will not lie down
I will not lie down
Well, don’t you ever get lonely?
Don’t you ever get down?
Don’t you ever get tired
Of all the wicked tongues in this town?
Of, baby, I just wanna take you away from here
I ain’t no tiger
I ain’t no little lamb
Suppose you tell me mama
Who do you think I think I am?
And ooh baby, don’t you give a damn?
Yeah, I’m gonna tear it up
Gonna trash it up
Gonna round it up
Gonna rip it up
I will not lie down

I dedicate this song to danlo.
You're The Inspiration
~ Chicago

You know our love was meant to be
The kind of love that lasts forever
And I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

You should know, everywhere I go
You're always on my mind,
in my heart In my soul

You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me sayin'
No one needs you more than I need you

And I know, yes I know that it's plain to see
We're so in love when we're together
And I know that I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

You should know, everywhere I go
Always on my mind, in my heart
In my soul

You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me sayin'
No one needs you more than I need you

Geezzze! Thanks Foul!Image

After that you REALLY deserve this! :x
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Say you don't know me, or recognize my face
Say you don't care who goes to that kind of place
Knee deep in the hoopla, sinking in your fight
Too many runaways eating up the night

Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Someone's always playing corporation games
Who cares they're always changing corporation names
We just want to dance here, someone stole the stage
They call us irresponsible, write us off the page

Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

It's just another Sunday, in a tired old street
police have got the chokehold, and we just lost the beat!

Who counts the money underneath the bar
Who rides the wreaking ball into our guitars
Don't tell us you need us, 'cos we're just simple fools
Looking for America, coming through your schools

(I'm looking out over that Golden Gate bridge
on another gorgeous sunny Saturday and I'm seeing bumper to bumper traffic.

Don't you remember (remember)

(Here's your favorite radio station, in your favorite radio city
The city by the bay, the city that rocks, the city that never sleeps)

Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

(We built, we built this city) built this city (we built, we built this city) (repeats out)

Didn't take long for this thread to get a bit ugly, did it? :P

Here's another for the denizens of the Think Tank:
Tom Petty - I Won't Back Down Lyrics

Well I won't back down, no I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down

Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won't back down

Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won't back down.

Well I know what's right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down

Hey baby there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won't back down
No, I won't back down

Love as thou wilt.

song the Think Tank...

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.
There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the world's asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Uhh, this one is for Lord Foul, who should be trying to get his hands on anything by Spocks Beard, because I know he'd love it, and for the rest of you, because it's a pretty, haunting song, and for me, because in a lot of ways, it describes where I am right now.

Watching The Tide
(D'Virgilio)

Watching the tide roll in again
Right now the ocean's my true friend
Pouring my heart out
She listens to me
I wait for her answer

Time flies so fast
It's hard to just keep up
I'll find patience with a little luck

I've cried like a child
Where's the man in me
Too low
What cost
I'll gladly pay the fee
To stop me runnin' round
Here and there and nowhere
I want to love again

Feel used and empty
It's hard to just keep up
I'll find patience with a little luck
I'll come runnin' home

I wait for her answer
Give me an answer
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

Green Day
by Green Day

A small cloud has fallen
The white mist hits the ground
My lungs comfort me with joy
Vegging on one detail
The rest just crowds around
My eyes itch of burning red
Picture sounds
Of moving insects so surreal
Lay around
Looks like I found something new
Laying in my bed
I think I'm in left field
I picture someone, I think it's you
You're standing so damn close
My body begins to swell
Why does 1 + 1 make 2

This is for Fist, the only guy I know who quotes Monty Python more than I do.
Knights of the Round Table

We're Knights of the Round Table,
We dance when ere we're able,
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Camelot,
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.

We're Knights of the Round Table,
Our show are formidable,
But many times, we're given rhymes
That are quite unsingable.
We're Opera mad in Camelot,
We sing from the diaphragm
a looooooot.

In war we're tough and able,
Quite indefatigable,
Between our quests we sequin vests,
And impersonate Clark Gable.
It's a busy life in Camelot,
I have to push the pram a lot.

Trey Anastasio - Flock of Words Lyrics
A change in your voice was all that I heard
A quavering breath a pause in a word
A shadow that suddenly covered my eyes
A ripple of water quite smooth otherwise

You try to go back and pave over the hole
Where an intake of breath had punctured my soul
Let me know let me know I need to know

A moment of silence it now seems absurd
That I learned so much from a pause in a word
Every bird on the wing leads the others along
Inside your flock of words something went wrong

I don't think that I was expecting a lot
I just saw that I'm passed being one couldn't fly
Let me go let me go I need to go

a song for all on the Watch.

Here are a few mostly instrumental pieces:

for dlb:
one of my favorite bluegrass songs In the House of Tom Bombadil by Nickel Creek, just for the joy of some good mountain music :) :)

for Matrixman:
with his love of twentieth century classical music, William Bolcom's awesome Songs of Innocence and Experience :) :)

for Damelon:
Beethoven's Seventh Symphony
Brahm's Third Symphony
Schubert's thirteenth string quartet
He introduced me to those pieces, and I will treasure them as beautiful gifts forever. :) :)

For Fisty and Lord Foul:
Dave Brubeck's Brandenburg Gate, a jazz fugue that was inspired by and pays tribute to their boy, Bach 8) 8)
Love as thou wilt.

For everyone in the Close:

Japan - Ghosts
When the room is quiet
The daylight almost gone
It seems there's something I should know
Well, I ought to leave
But the rain it never stops
And I've no particular place to go

Just when I think I'm winning
When I've broken every door
The ghosts of my life
Blow wilder than before
Just when I thought I could not be stopped
When my chance came to be king
The ghosts of my life
Blew wilder than the wind

Well, I'm feeling nervous
Now I find myself alone
The simple life's no longer there
Once I was so sure
Now the doubt inside my mind
Comes and goes, but leads nowhere
If you change the font to white within spoiler tags does it break them?
For my friend ChoChiyo, whose vision of our world humbles and shames me.
What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see ’em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue..... clouds of white
Bright blessed days....dark sacred nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are also on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin’.. how do you do
They’re really sayin’......i love you.

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more.....than I’ll never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world

(instrumental break)

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are there on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin’.. how do you do
They’re really sayin’...*spoken*(I ....love....you).

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
*spoken*(you know their gonna learn
A whole lot more than I’ll never know)
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself .......what a wonderful world.

I was just browsing this thread and didn't expect this! Thank you very much, duchess. I don't know William Bolcom, so that's a name to keep in mind. :)

Don't have song lyrics handy at the moment for a dedication...

for Cho

"Private Plane" Lyric by "Husker Du"

You ask how far the farthest star is
To go by bus or to go by car is
Way too far, you couldn't say
You won't get there anyway

He says it takes a private plane
But you could never get back to your feet again
Unless you break the ball and chain
He says "Now, it's a private plane"

With all these places in your mind
There's no reason you have to find
Your private plane
Don't play that game

To my wife, Tracie (Furl's Fire):

Amazed, by Lonestar

Everytime our eyes meet
This feelin inside me, is almost more than I can take
Baby when you touch me
I can feel how much you love me
And it just blows me away
I've never been this close to anyone... or anything
I can hear your thoughts
I can see your dreams

I don't know how you do what you do
I'm so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I want to spend the rest of my life
With you by my side
Forever and ever......
Every little thing that you do
Baby....I'm amazed by you!

The smell of you skin
The taste of your kiss
The way you whisper in the dark
Your hair all around me
Baby you surround me
You touch every place in my heart
oOoo it feels like the first time everytime..everytime
I want to spend the whole night... in your eyes

I don't know how you do what you do
I'm so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I want to spend the rest of my life
With you by my side
Forever and ever.....
Every little thing that you do ...baby im amazed by you...

Every little thing that you do
I'm sooo in love with you...it just keeps gettin better
I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side
Forever and ever.....
Every little thing that you do ......

baby I'm amazed by you.
Your love amazes me.
