for deer of the dawn:
(Remember this one?)

Thank You
by Ray Boltz

I dreamed I went to heaven
And you were there with me
We walked upon the streets of gold
Beside the crystal sea
We heard the angels singing
Then someone called your name
You turned and saw this young man running
And he was smiling as he came
And he said "friend you may not know me now"
And then he said, "but wait
You used to teach my Sunday School
When I was only eight
And every week you would say a prayer
Before the class would start
And one day when you said that prayer
I asked Jesus in my heart"

CHORUS
Thank you... for giving to the Lord
I am a life that was changed
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am so glad you gave

Then another man stood before you
And said, "Remember the time
A missionary came to your church
And his pictures made you cry.
You didn't have much money,
But you gave it anyway.
Jesus took the gift you gave
And that's why I'm here today."

Thank you for giving to the Lord.
I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord.
I am so glad you gave.

One by one they came
Far as the eye could see.
Each life somehow touched
By your generosity.
Little things that you had done,
Sacrifices made,
Unnoticed on the earth
In heaven, now proclaimed.

And I know that up in heaven
You're not supposed to cry
But I am almost sure
There were tears in your eyes
As Jesus took your hand
And you stood before the Lord
He said, "My child, look around you.
Great is your reward."

Thank you for giving to the Lord.
I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord.
I am so glad you gave.

I am so glad you gave.

One for Linna. :D

There's A Rugged Road by Judee Sill

(The Shawn Colvin version says "she" throughout)

There's a rugged road on the prairie

Stretchin' all across the last frontier

There a stranger strives solitary

Blessed is the lonesome pioneer

Roll on, roll on, roll on

Night birds are flyin'

Come on, the light is gone

Hope's slowly dyin'

Tell me how you come ridin' through

Still surveyin' the miles yet to run

On the long and lonely road to kingdom come

He can blaze a trail, though the rumblin'

Dims his guiding light to just a spark

When the hour is low, he comes tumblin'

When the moon is high he gives his heart

Roll on, roll on, roll on

Night birds are flyin'

Come on, the light is gone

Hope's slowly dyin'

Tell me how you come ridin' through

Gainin' steady till this round is won

On the long and lonely road to kingdom come

People far below chasin' pleasures

Offer him directions on the run

Prophets on the path offer treasures

Though she's mighty hungry he takes none

Roll on, roll on, roll on

Night birds are flyin'

Come on, the light is gone

Hope's slowly dyin'

Tell me how you come ridin' through

Blindly faithful but followin' none

On the long & lonely road to kingdom come
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle. -Philo of Alexandria

And two for Danlo, who is angry and all fired up!

Do You Hear the People Sing?

"Do You Hear The People Sing?"

[Enjolras:]
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

[Combeferre:]
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?

[Courfeyrac:]
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!

[All:]
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

[Feuilly:]
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

[All:]
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes

And All Fired Up (excuse the cheesy video)

"All Fired Up"

Livin' with my eyes closed, goin' day to day
I never knew the difference, I never cared either way
Lookin' for a reason, searchin' for a sign
Reachin' out with both hands, I gotta feel the kick inside

All fired up
(Now I believe there comes a time)
All fired up
(When everything just falls in line)
All fired up
(We live an' learn from our mistakes)
All fired up, fired up, fired up, hey

Ain't nobody livin' in a perfect world
And everybody's out there, cryin' to be heard
And now I got a new fire, burnin' in my eyes
Lightin' up the darkness, movin' like a meteorite

All fired up
(Now I believe there comes a time)
All fired up
(When everything just falls in line)
All fired up
(We live an' learn from our mistakes)
All fired up, fired up, fired up
(The deepest cuts are healed by faith)

Now I believe there comes a time
When everything just falls in line
We live an' learn from our mistakes
The deepest cuts are healed by faith

Now I believe there comes a time
When everything just falls in line
We live an' learn from our mistakes
The deepest cuts are healed by faith

Now I believe there comes a time
When everything just falls in line
We live an' learn from our mistakes
The deepest cuts are healed by faith

Now I believe there comes a time
When everything just falls in line
We live an' learn from our mistakes
The deepest cuts are healed by faith
Now I believe

All fired up
(Now I believe there comes a time)
All fired up
(When everything just falls in line)
All fired up
(We live an' learn from our mistakes)
All fired up, fired up, fired up, hey
(The deepest cuts are healed by faith)

Now I believe there comes a time
When everything just falls in line
We live an' learn from our mistakes
The deepest cuts are healed by faith

Sorry, Deer.

Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing
Is there no world for tomorrow, if we wait for today?

For our dear deer, deer of the dawn:

Jesus Draw Me Ever Nearer
Writer(s): Keith Getty, Margaret Becker
Theme(s): Suffering & Trials

Chorus 1
May this journey bring a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my heart's testing
With Your likeness let me wake
Verse
Jesus draw me ever nearer
As I labor thro' the storm
You have called me to this passage
And I'll follow tho' I'm worn
Verse 2
Jesus guide me thro' the tempest
Keep my spirit staid and sure
When the midnight meets the morning
Let me love You even more
Chorus 2
May this journey be a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my heart's testing
With Your likeness let me wake
Verse 3
Let the treasures of the trial
Form within me as I go
And at the end of this long passage
Let me leave them at Your throne
Ending
Jesus draw me ever nearer
Jesus draw me ever nearer
Jesus draw me ever nearer to You

Pearl Jam – Sirens (for Jenn)

Hear the sirens
Hear the sirens

Hear the sirens
Hear the circus so profound

I hear the sirens
More & more in this here town

Let me catch my breath & breathe
And reach across the bed

Just to know we're safe
I am a grateful man

The slightest bit of light
And I can see you clear

Have you take your hand, and feel your breath
For fear this someday will be over

I pull you close, so much to lose
Knowing that nothing lasts forever

I didn't care, before you were here
I danced in laughter with the everafter

But all things change
Let this remain

Hear the sirens
Covering distance in the night

The sound echoing closer
Will they come for me next time?

For every choice mistake I've made
It's not my plan

To send you in the arms of
Another man

And if you choose to stay I'll wait
I'll understand

It's a fragile thing
This life we lead

If I think too much I can get over
Whelmed by the grace

By which we live our lives
With death over our shoulders

Want you to know
That should I go I always loved you
Held you high above, true

I study your face
And the fear goes away

It's a fragile thing
This life we lead

If I think too much I can get over
Whelmed by the grace

By which we live our lives
With death over our shoulder

Want you to know
That should I go I always loved you
Held you high above, true

I study your face
And the fear goes away
The fear goes away
The fear goes away

Aah ah, oh oh
Aah ah, oh oh

For Mighara:

"Brother," by NEEDTOBREATHE

Ramblers in the wilderness we can’t find what we need
Get a little restless from the searching
Get a little worn down in-between
Like a bull chasing the matador is the man left to his own schemes.
Everybody needs someone beside em’ shining like a lighthouse from the sea

Brother let me be your shelter!
I’ll never leave you all alone.
I can be the one you call,
When you’re low.
Brother let me be your fortress,
When the night winds are driving on.
Be the one to light the way,
Bring you ho-o-ome.

Face down in the desert, now... there’s a cage wrapped around my heart!
I found a way to drop the keys where my failures were
Now my hands can’t reach that far.
I ain’t made for a rivalry - I could never take the world alone.
I know that in my weakness I am strong, but
It’s your love that brings me home.

Brother, let me be your shelter.
I’ll never leave you all alone.
I can be the one you call,
When you’re low.
Brother, let me be your fortress,
When the night winds are driving on...
Be the one to light the way,
Bring you home.

And when you call and need me near
Sayin' where'd you go?
Brother, I'm right here.
And on those days when the sky begins to fall,
You're the blood of my blood.
We can get through it all.

Brother let me be your shelter
I’ll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
When you’re feelin' low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home

Brother, let me be your shelter
I’ll never leave you all alone.
I can be the one you call..
When you’re low.
Brother let me be your fortress,
When the night winds are driving on.
Be the one to light the way..
Bring you home.
Be the one to light the way,
Bring you home.

For everyone who's felt like "the canary in the coal mine" in a group of people who were supposed to be friends.
Or who's longed for the redemption of the whole WORLD especially keenly.
Just now, in particular, for Mighara:
"Wasteland by NEEDTOBREATHE"

Edit, added this:

I, as a broken person, love hearing these words of the lyrics & applying them to myself:
There was a greatness I thought (felt?) for awhile /
But somehow it changed /
Some kind of blindness I used to protect me /
From all of my stains..

And this one is me, too:
All of these people I meet /
It seems like they're fine /
Yeah, in some ways I hope that they're not /
And their hearts are like mine.

No one should be "the first one in line to die" because his brothers and sisters throw him out.

A little Christian RAAAAAGGGEE music for deer:
"Able," by NEEDTOBREATHE

There’s a host of hurts we come across /
None of which alike /
From the air inside the birthing room /
To the darkness where we die /
Though I feel I’m just as strong as any man I know... /
I’m not able...
I’m not Able.
I’m not Abel, <--?
...On my own.

We were born /
With knives in-hand: /
Trained to kill our fellow man. /
If we’re not better than the rest, /
How will children do their best?

LOVE YOU!

for Julie -

It's a great big world
with a million other guys
It's I feel so lucky when I look
In those green eyes

Is it the sun
That makes them so green
Those are the prettiest eyes
I have ever seen

Green eyes...

What makes them sparkle
What makes them shine
What makes those eyes of yours
Look into mine

I'm badly missing that fiery & quixotic, courageous & wise old man who was a spiritual father to a bunch of us in college.

He might not have ever come into contact with this song, (I don't know.) but it sure fits him:

"Jesus, draw me ever nearer"
Jesus, Draw me ever nearer
As I labor through the storm
You have called me to this passage
And I'll follow, though I'm worn

Chorus:
May this journey bring a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my hearts testing
With Your likeness let me wake

Jesus, guide me through the tempest
Keep my spirit stayed and sure
When the midnight meets the morning
Let me love You even more

(Chorus.)

Let the treasures of the trial
Form within me as I go
And at the end of this long passage
Let me leave them at your throne

Chorus.

His journey was really about wanting to be with Jesus, and bearing the trials of this life until then.
And all about yielding a blessing for those around him in the meantime.

Also, one of my favorite rants of his was about how the church in America tends to abandon the verses of "Amazing Grace" that are about death and heaven.
(So we were going to have all of them in our songbook, that's for sure!)

And here's a song he loved:
"How Beautiful"
How beautiful the hands that served
The wine and the bread and the sons of the earth
How beautiful the feet that walked
The long dusty roads and the hill to the cross

How beautiful, how beautiful
How beautiful is the body of Christ

How beautiful the heart that bled
That took all my sin and bore it instead
How beautiful the tender eyes
That choose to forgive and never despise

How beautiful, how beautiful,
How beautiful is the body of Christ

And as He laid down His life
We offer this sacrifice
That we will live just as he died
Willing to pay the price
Willing to pay the price

How beautiful the radiant bride
Who waits for her groom with His light in her eyes
How beautiful when humble hearts give
The fruit of pure lives so that others may live

How beautiful, how beautiful
How beautiful is the body of Christ

How beautiful the feet that bring
The sound of good news and the love of the King
How beautiful the hands that serve
The wine and the bread and the sons of the earth

How beautiful, how beautiful
How beautiful is the body of Christ

for Carol -

I'm sittin' in the railway station
Got a ticket for my destination
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and one-man band

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound

Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting silently for me

Ev'ry day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And ev'ry stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound

Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting silently for me

Tonight I'll sing my songs again
I'll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony, I need someone to comfort me

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound

Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting silently for me
Silently for me

Two for deer of the dawn.

"Lift your head, weary sinner" / David Crowder
(The one I would "pump" in the car, if I ever really did something like "pumping my music" that wouldn't just make people laugh at me.)

Lift your head, weary sinner! The river's just ahead.
Down the path of forgiveness, salvation's waiting there!
You built a mighty fortress 10,000 burdens high.
Love is here to lift you up, here to lift you high!

...If you're lost and wrecked again,
Come stumbling in like a prodigal child.
See the walls start crumbling..
Let the gates of glory be open wide...

And this...

Two song dedications...

"Is He Worthy?" for deer of the dawn.
Do you feel the world is broken?
(We do.)
Do you feel the shadows deepen?
(We do.)
But do you know that all the dark won't stop the light from getting through?
(We do.)
Do you wish that you could see it all made new?
(We do.)

"Psalm 19 - Sons of Korah" for Menolly and SD, hoping it will be a bit of sunshine in the midst of this cancer journey.
(Disambiguation: yes, the name of the band is Sons of Korah. perhaps not the same name as did the original, though, it seems...)
