Before you read it, I just want to say that this hyperlink offers the best viewpoint on the war in Iraq that I have as of yet seen. PROFOUNDLY ASTUTE!!
we often forget that Iraq was once a US ally .. when Iraq invaded Iran .. the US were all for supporting Hussein in that conflict .. which resulted in a stale mate .. but nevertheless .. it is unusual is it not to support an aggressor?? Particularly one such as Hussein??

We supported their operation at the time (to serve an immediate interest as opposed to developing long-term relations), but that doesn't mean they became a staunch ally. I think the US has been there to support its allies more than its fair share. The fact that America's allies can depend on her to defend them when needed should be apparent to someone in Australia.
On the other hand, if Australia, for some strange reason, began an oppressive campaign against the aborigines, and was seen to be threatening the philipines with nuclear or chemical weapons, should we just stand by?

thats why the US trained bin Laden and supplied military equiptment to Afghanistan .. so they could overcome Russian occupation .. cos they really 'cared' about the Afgani's .. and they thought bin Laden was just a really nice guy .. who would do right by them
and they did liberate Ho Chi Minh from his encarceration .. the Bay of Pigs fiasco .. when the US dropped the pro-US/capatilist anti-Castro Cubans into Cuba promising support .. when they were met with unsuspected resistance .. oh there are so many examples .. of friends of convenience arent there?
But the US are not alone in relationships like these .. any nation large enough to pursue their own ambitions .. will be prone to making relationships of convenience. Its politics!
However .. pretending that the US is above such behaviour is like pretending Bush's excrament is odourless and above all unoffensive!
