The Brothers Grimm
The hubby wanted to go see this, so, we went. (My line of thought was wait and rent it.) I don't want to comment much one way or the other as I had a witch of a headache and the theatre had their AC set on "hang meat" so I was pretty uncomfortable and unable to be fair.
What I will say, is that one of the reasons I was hesitant to go see it was because of Heath Ledger. He hasn't done anything to prove to me he is worth the hype he's been getting. His "Jacob Grimm" was the one thing I really did enjoy. Maybe he has some talent after all!

I saw this movie with a friend.
I agree that Heath Ledger did a very nice job of portraying Jacob Grimm.
His character was about the only thing I liked about the movie.
The movie never really got off the ground for me.
It seemed to me the thing couldn't decide to be a horror movie, a fantasy, a parody of a fantasy, a slapstick comedy, or a psychological exploration of a broken man's return to wholeness.
As it happened, it turned about to be a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothing.
When it ended, I was left feeling very unsatisfied.
Visually, it was very nice. It had a nice gloomy, brooding "mood."

and enjoyable 6 out of 10 for me. I enjoyed it because it was a Gilliam movie, the two principles were great, and there were so many funny references to fairy tales it had me facinated. Having said that, the execution, or more accurately, editing of the movie was appauling. It never had any real steam to keep it going. A large part of this may have to do with the whole Weinstein bros. and Disney problems at the time and that Gilliam was asked to do some major cutting and stuff. He got angry, and walked away from the finished film for nearly a year (completing another indie flick in Regina, Sask. called Tideland in the meantime). The project never got the attention it deserved and it shows. There is a gem of a movie buried in there that gets lost...

baaah! that stinks! I had the blessing to have those books on the shelf in my home growing up, (anyone remember "Mother West Wind"?), and are such a profound part of my early reading years that I'm sad the movie is that bad, especially because Gilliam is one of my super "favs". I haven't seen it, and now probably won't, but maybe it'll be a little better on the "small screen". I'll just wait til its on cable, I guess.

yah, I totally agree. Have you seen the criterion director's cut. There are a couple of absolutely hilarious scenes put back. Oh, and they have the US version that was released briefly too --- with the HAPPY ending!!!Brazil!

Oh, and let us not forget Fisher King. Love that movie.

I totally agree, Ledger was the only good thing about the film (Damon was okay). I saw something in him I didn't know he had (after Patriot, I kind of just assumed he was a 'hunk' typecast guy).

The Norwegian film-makers who did the recent horror film Dead Snow are going to make Hansel and Gretel With-hunters.
I liked the Brothers Grimm, though I didn't think I was going to. Pryce, Stormare, and Ledger were all good. Damon was his usual completely uninspiring self.
I grew up on the Grimm's tales, and it's often good to see someone do an absurdist twist of something familiar. At the very least, it was entertaining.

It was entertaining...but I couldn't follow it, just one crazy scene after the next.

I too am a big Gilliam fan, and was disappointed. When I heard later that he just kinda dropped this project in the editing room, it made sense. The mood was really there though, and something that stuck with me for a few days after. There are some small gems buried in there.
But now I'm really looking forward to the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. There is a trailer out now, and it looks like it could be something special.
