Ok, so I just finished Deadhouse Gates, and I am left stunned.
Erikson's tale of the journey of the Seventh Malazan Army across the Seven Cities sub-continent was masterful, with an ending both poignant and painful. The plight of Duiker, Coltaine, Sormo and the others captured me like very few storylines ever have. Add to that the revelation of Icarium and Mappo, and this was an amazing book!
Excellent work Mr Erikson. Trully excellent.

i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

Oh, I'm not stopping. This storu is too good. I'm just reading a few oyher books before I go out and buy Memories of Ice to recover from the journey of the Chain of Dogs.
So I read The Man who Risked his Partner last night, and started Going Postal by Terry Pratchet this morning. At my current rate I will be able to go buy Memories of Ice in two days.

on the malazan forum, when polled, most of the members picked Memories of Ice or Deadhouse Gates as their favorites. As emotional as Deadhouse Gates is, Memories of Ice actually mangages to top it!!
These books are so brilliant.

Have started House of Chains yesterday. Memories of Ice was amazing - the battle of Coral was heartbreaking.

"And no less a cipher to us, Historian. The clans do as he commands and say nothing. It is not shared certainty or mutual understanding that breeds our silence. It is awe."
Duiker could say nothing to that. He found himself turning away, eyes caught and gathered into the sky's sweeping blurs of pale yellow. They migrate. Creatures of instinct. A mindless plunge into fatal currents. A beautiful, horrifying dance to Hood, every step mapped out. Every step... Deadhouse Gates - Erikson

Have just finished House of Chains and I'm starting to love Erikson's way of making me root for both sides - it may be good and evil, but there are people on both sides that deserve to win.
That and the twists he scatters through the plot like hidden gems. The true original identity of the Whirlwind Goddess for example was a brilliant surprise.
So it's off to buy Midnight Tides on Tuesday.

Well I've been a hardcore fan of this series since day one, I absolutely loved Gardens of the Moon, read Deadhouse Gates over the summer, and I'm not starting my read of Memories of Ice, brilliant. Silverfox is an amazing character and who doesn't love Dujek. Cheers.

Wow! I am loving Midnight Tides. Trull Sengar and the Beddict brothers are amazing and I can't wait to find out who Bugg really is.

Just finished Midnight Tides and I must say, whereas Martin's characters seem to die at shocking times, Erikson's die exactly when they should. It's like it's not really a surprise, yet it's still heart-wrenching.
Hull Beddict, Brys Beddict, Ceda Kuru Qan, Buruk the Pale, First Concubine Nissal, even First Eunuch Nifidas and King Ezgara Diskanar.
What surprised me though is this:

At the end of the book, Fear leaves the Edur but Trull remains. That means that Fear was not present when Trull was shorn in House of Chains. Interesting.

P. S. Feel free to leave a comment on the blog. Since the publisher will be checking things out (their publicity department set the whole thing up, after all), if there are enough positive responses, we might be able to do this again later this year!
