Favorite Rebel/Rebel Group?

Post by duchess of malfi »

Let's talk Rebels here! Whether it's the Star Wars bunch, or the Founding Fathers of the USA or Oliver Cromwell or Sparticus (or someone I haven't mentioned) -- who is your favorite rebel??
Love as thou wilt.

oooh this could get as heated as the other debates ..

when we talk rebels what exactly do you consider defines a rebel?

does it include a 'freedom fighter'? I guess they're rebels too eh?

I was going to begin a thread .. Your favourite military tactician .. but will save it for another day

I would say being Australian .. Ned Kelly!!

14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I
will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the
mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14:14 I will
ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Hmm.. My fav rebel... well, the name of my school's sports team(s) is the Rebels, so Drake Young. He's on the basketball and football and softball teams. And he's my friend Sam's (samadhi, I'll explain later) older brother. There's no one who's a bigger Rebel.

V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!!!! That's the Rebel battle-cry!!!

Ooh, Ryzel- good one! Lucifer! Not my favorite perhaps;but certainly the ultimate rebel!
This topic reminded me of a passage from Paradise lost. Something I had to dig to find. It is Lucifer speaking- after failing his takeover bid and being zapped lightning quick to his new abode

Is this the Region, this the Soil, the Clime,
Said then the lost Arch-Angel, this the seat
That we must change for Heav'n, this mournful gloom
For that celestial light? Be it so, since he
Who now is Sovran can dispose and bid
What shall be right: fardest from him is best
Whom reason hath equald, force hath made supream
Above his equals. Farewell happy fields
Where joy forever dwells: Hail horrours, hail
Infernal world, and thou profoundest Hell
Receive thy new Possessor: One who brings
A mind not to be chang'd by Place or Time.
The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n.
What matter where, if I be still the same,
And what I should be, all but less than he
Whom Thunder hath made greater? Here at least
We shall be free; th' Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reign secure, and in my choyce
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav'n
But wherefore let we then our faithful friends,
Th' associates and copartners of our loss
Lye thus astonisht on the oblivious Pool,
And call them not to share with us their part
In this unhappy Mansion, or once more
With rallied Arms to try what may be yet
Regaind in Heav'n, or what more lost in Hell?

I've been thinking about this and I think I have several favs. But one of them is Fidel Castro .. I admire his ideal of liberating his people from the then oppressive Batista regime .. and establishing a representative democracy and social justice in the form of a welfare economy. I know he didnt exactly realise this ideal .. but that was his intent and the driving force of his revolutionary strategem.

Socrates
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Just for the record folk. I am not really "for" Lucifer as much as I am for challenging the status quo. And if you are going to challenge the status quo why not aim for the top? No doubt Lucifer thought he had a good reason to rebel. This certainly makes him the most significant rebel in the western world and thus I pick him as my favorite. If you want me to pick a rebel with an agenda the we/I would consider good you need to ask for that.

But it may be necessary to remember that not all rebels are benign, neither at the outset nor maybe especially in the end. Because Lucifers fall is part of the problem of evil and thus falls into a category all of its own I will instead point to the leaders of the russian revolution. Although some people claim that they were not the paragons of virtue that they have been portrayed as by later historians (a notoriously communist friendly bunch) I have no doubt that they initially had intentions that did not include deporting entire cities to concentrations camps in Siberia, but this is what happened.

To be more specific Dutchess, I'll go with John Adams. 8)

As for Che. He was the beneficiary of incredibly favorable cropping. His famous pose is actually from a very mundane picture.
