'The Insider' & 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'

Post by Usivius »

I saw these two movies on DVD last weekend and was moved by both of them. Lemony Snickets was surprisingly funny and wry. I was not expectingmuch from this although had been curious. I have not read the books, nor do I know anything about them. But I enjoyed the movie alot. Funny funny...

The Insider was gripping form beginning to end. Credit the director (producer and writer), Michael Mann, and his great cast! I love seeing Colm Feor in ANYTHING!
Wow. I knew the story but how it was told was deeply engrossing. And that end where the Dr. has his two girls over, and they see the interview finally aired ... tears in my eyes...

Yes, Colm Feore is always interesting to watch. He was outstanding as Trudeau.

The Insider is a good movie, but I really wished it hadn't started with Hezbollah, because I found that to be actually a much more gripping story than the main one about the tobacco industry. In the greater scheme of things, the Middle East conflict is a more important and compelling matter. I wanted Al Pacino and company to stay right where they were! I'm afraid Michael Mann effectively sabotaged the rest of the movie for me.

But I'm glad the movie meant something to you, at least.

interesting, MM. I can see your point. Perhaps they spent too much time on that segment, but it was done to set the scene and characters (Pacino and Plummer) for what was to come.
Myself, I was not as interested in that aspect as I had my mind set on seeing the (dramatized) story about the tabbacco industry...
A few years ago I saw a doc. on how the "seven dwarves" would cheat tests which would measure noccoitne and tar content. They knew how the measurements were taken and fixed the filtered end of the cigarette (the part that goes in a person's mouth) to have holes just past where the testing machine would 'draw a breath' but not too far that a person's mouth would not cover it. This made the tests read a lesser amount of 'bad stuff' than a normal person would take in...

clever, evil b@stards...

I didn't mean to trivialize the tobacco story, of course. It's an issue that affects people here more immediately and intimately than anything taking place on the other side of the world.

 no offence taken! But when you mentioned about Hezbollah, I have to agree ... imagine a movie with the same actors (minus Crowe) showing us all about that segment!.. sweeet!
