Gilden Fire is good, but a little dull, and the Haruchai background and telepathy are the only things I enjoyed about it.

I believe that including Koric's POV would change much more than any of us understand as far as the view of the 1st Chrons as a whole.

Gilden-Fire is dull?? dull???

do you rave??? 8O 8O

oh...wait...ummm...I guess you do, it's in your name after all. ;)

Seriously tho, I agree with SRD about taking it out of the IllEarth War, having the POV switch to Korik's would have definitely made the "dream" aspect a little hard to consider. And he never intended for it to be read. But, and there are not many things I agree with Del Rey about, on this one occasion, I'm glad it was included in Daughter of Regals, and later but into a small book of it's own (I have both). It helped me understand the Bloodguard and Haruchai a little bit better.
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

And yet half of TPTP was written from Mhoram's POV.

SRD has said that by the time of TPTP, Covenant's Unbelief wasn't as important as it was in LFB and TIW.

I agree with SRD and Del Ray. Hehe.

Mhoram's POV is a great assertion at that point, but in IW Koric's ruins where the reader is at with things.

Still, let's say there is one super-gilden at the center of Grimmerdhore and this is the one under attack, it might be dire enough to send yet another person back to tell of it's plight. This could fit by having Koric's Mission leave earlier.

I believe the mission to Seareach was edited out because it made the book too long. If it had anything to do with POV that was some excuse Del Rey made up in order to convince SRD that he needed to cut an extensive part of the book.

With the POV issue.. I don't think it would've mattered THAT much.. In both of the Final Chrons so far Donaldson's only hidden the truth from Linden when it's quite obvious what's going on to anyone reading the book..

Well, I'm enjoying it. I would love a whole book just about the Haruchai. (More than 70 pages)

Both Thomas Covenant 1st and 2nd chronicles were the first ever "real" books I read at 13 years old. I loved them and read them all through a holiday. I have read the series a few times over the years and never realised there was a missing chapters book released.
After finding recently I quickly scoured ebay for a copy and was very pleased to find one. Its a paperback version published by Fontana, don't know if its 1st edition.
Currently started reading the 1st and 2nd chronicles and will add Gilden-Fire to it and also am planning to buy the new chronicles also.

Very pleased. Thank God for Donaldson otherwise I may never have gotten into fantasy/scifi.

Thankyou Menolly. I will gladly post an introduction somewhere appropriate very soon. Glad I made sense as my 1st post has multiple grammar errors all over it...... :-)

I'm not picky about such things if someone's posting in this thread. :D Welcome to the Watch, and to Gilden Fire!

I just read Gilden-Fire, I think it is well worth reading, it explains how the blood guard came to be, you can get it on Amazon.com for a couple bucks used.

It's eerie that two of our members from the Buffalo area (Earthblood) have the same avatar. Welcome Guns!...

how did you find out there were two of us in buffalo area? i'm still trying to figure out how to use web site functions. just started reading the ruin of the earth, after reading thomas covenant novels when they first came out 30+years ago (?) yes it is strange we both chose the same avatar, maybe because it's how we both feel living in this hell hole in the winter, makes me look somewhat like my avatar. really does...

You can get an idea how many are in your area by clicking on the button in the bottom of a post that says "phoogle map" or clicking here to get to it and then zooming in to your area. Or, click here, which is the link to the Watch's memberlist, then change "Joined Date" to "Location" and hit Sort. Eventually you will get to the page where those who list themselves as being in Buffalo are listed.

But danlo is also an admin here at the Watch. He may have other methods of finding out member locations available to him that we regular members know nothing about.

Anyway, it says right there under your avatar that you're in Buffalo. And Earthblood's been around a long time, and we remember he's from up that way, too.

So yeah, GF is amazing! Seeing the Haruchai army come to the Land, meeting Kevin and the Giants and the Ranyhyn, taking the Vow... Among my favorite handful of chapters in the eight books released so far.
