PICK A HULK - There is plenty to choose from

Post by aTOMiC »

The Hulk character has a certain appeal that is unmistakable. There is something primal about the Hulk’s personality that must strike a chord with fans. I was never much of a fan of the Hulk (except during the tv series run in the 70’s). The “Hulk Smash! Hulk hate puny humans! Hulk strongest one there is!” Hulk is the one I was introduced to first and seems to linger in my mind but that Hulk was never a Hulk I could really get into. There is a Hulk that I do like. Peter David’s run on Hulk introduced us to the “Professor Hulk”. A Hulk character with all of the Hulk’s enormous strength and Bruce Banners vast intellect combined. The Professor Hulk didn’t last nearly long enough for my tastes but he managed to lure me in as a fan. (Gary Frank’s art didn’t hurt either.)

Well, I had to go with Fixit, even though he's supposed to be same as the 'Avengers Jerk' hulk. I also liked the 'Professor Hulk" a lot...

I like the brooding grey monstrosity that first appeared. Very much in the Jeckyl/Hyde mold.

Heh, I kicked his ass tons of times....I have to admit, I did it best in FF #166-167; it took Galactus to put him back right after that!

 As long as it's not some rare, expensive issue, I wouldn't mind tracking it down just to see that butt-kicking! I never had much interest in the Fantastic Four. I must admit, though, I had a soft spot for the Thing, in much the same way I had for the Hulk. Ah, well, if the Thing is gonna be smacked around, it's more honourable to be smacked at the hands of the Hulk.

I voted Professor Hulk - brains and brawn. I just like the idea of it, without having ever read any Hulk comics. I got to know the Hulk via the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno TV series. I liked Ferrigno's portrayal of the Hulk. It was easy to feel frustrated for and protective of this big, child-like mute who couldn't express himself except in pure physical action. It's the same feeling I get watching Frankenstein. It's about rooting for the social misfit, the pariah - the "monster" who exposes human beings as the real monsters. As an immigrant kid at the time assimilating into Western culture, I guess I locked onto the Hulk because I could see in him my own awkwardness and inability to express myself very well, or the rage at being picked on because I was different. How I wished I could've turned into a green giant myself and butted some heads. Sorry for the psychology report.

Of course, I don't know all the different Hulks listed here. Some, it seems, aren't exactly "good guy" Hulks. I don't think I'd care to read about them. I just had always wished that Ferrigno's Hulk could say something, anything, to the human twits always chasing after him. Or better yet, to be able to talk to those who understood his plight. Therefore, the idea of a Hulk who retains the intelligence and speech of Dr. Banner is appealing.

I had mentioned in another thread that the only Marvel heroes I really cared about were Thor, Spider-man and Silver Surfer. Well, I guess I should include the Hulk, too - but I'm basing that purely on Ferrigno's version.

Crap, this was a long post. I normally don't talk at length about big, green guys...

Matrix, FF #'s 166-7 shouldn't be too expensive; certainly under $10 each, which is a mere pittance for such a classic!

I liked him the best when people were afraid of him.
Or maybe this artist just captured it right for me.

I think I've always been in the other camp that kinda rooted for the Thing even though well all know there isn't any way he can win unless he manages to trick the Hulk in some way. In a stand up fight the madder Hulk gets the stronger Hulk gets and having a guy made of big orange rocks punching him in the face is bound to get him pretty angry. Oh well.

Jennifer Connolly is the only reason I bought that damn dvd....not only is she beautiful; she is the best actor in the thing. Heh, I actually didn't buy the dvd, it was included in a 2-pack with Serenity for the same price as Serenity cost alone.
