Was Kevin suffering from the sin of pride? I can see why he didn't believe he could change Creation for the better to win his war with Foul (and the Demondim) but Amok mentions that he knew about the White Gold. He probably also had some knowledge of the other powerful races of his world. Yet he di...

Donaldson maintains that fantasy fiction deals with the portrayal of a character's internal, psychological or spiritual struggle as a narrative in the story's external setting. This would lend a credance to your overall theory.

I've always thought the music of Krzysztof Penderecki was well suited to this tale - "Symphony #3" and "To Deum" especially, but even his older and better known stuff would fit well in some places. "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" seems well suited to the sunbane...

It seems to have an environmental parallel also - regarding pollution, the destruction of the ozone layer and all that. But the Vietnam parallel does hold.

Awesome post! And, it's great to have a fresh voice in DTL. You must read 2nd and Last Chronicles asap! Cheers all. Deconstructing a novel, like a movie, isn't all that hard, but it does require repeated exposure as well as the thoughts and insights of others who've analysed the same work and noted...

This, unless it was something totally over the top - actual membership in the KKK or American Nazi Party, or something like that where any sort of voluntary association with the guy would damage your reputation.

I have at times unsubscribed from a FB friend over politics, but never because of the contents of their views and always because of the vehemence and force of them. I don't mind the odd share or post promoting (or attacking) this world view or that social issue, but I resent having my message feed s...

I like Cate Blanchett for Elena. That's pretty much exactly the way I pictured her. Avery is a tough one. I picture her as a sterner and more hagrid Angelina Jolie. I'm not too sure who'd fit the bill. I'm surprised no one's mentioned Joan Covenant yet, though she's only appeared in TWL as far as I ...

Okay okay -

Found an absolutely PRISTINE set of 2nd Chronicles at the used bookstore when I went to replace my waterloged TIW and PTP.

Forty pages into The Wounded Land now.

It will be some time before I read them, Wayfriend. Don't worry about spoiling them for me. Go on all you want.

Re: The Chronicles as Allegory

I have always viewed the Land and the story as an allegory (not sure if this is correct literary definition) for TC. He enters the Land and he is actually entering himself. The various parts of the Land are parts of himself This was certainly Donaldson's intention when he structured this story the ...

I reread this chapter today, and am frankly astounded that Stephen Donaldson would have done this. The image formed by the rocks, Covenant's tale of the leper woman, and his comment about her husband should make it clear enough, but then Mhoram goes and gives it all to us, the readers, on a silver p...

Thanks all. Regarding the second chronicles, I've been under the impression that the 1st Chronicles articulate the story the way Donaldson had initially intended it be told. The 2nd Chronicles were produced at the behest of his publishers, who insisted on sequels. Now this doesn't make them bad, of ...

Covenant's unbelief is rooted in his leprosy. He can't accept the Land as real because everything it offers is a danger to him. Everything defies the law of leprosy. He knows he's going to return to his own world at some point and, if he gives in to the seductions of the Land, he won't be able to l...

Running Amok on Kevin's Watch!

Greetings all. I've been here a while, actually, just not registered and posting and all that. Read some interesting discussion. Looking forward to participating. A few summers ago, 2010 if I recall, I had some vacation time at my in-law's cottage on the great lakes, and there's nothing quite like s...
