Actually, the explanation sounds a little like Roger Zelany's Chronicles of Amber series with shadows of reality and Amber and Chaos being the originals.

I have to say the saddest part of both trilogies is Nom's unfulfilled dream of being a cabaret singer;)

Seriously though, the Giant's massacre by Giant Ravers was pretty tough to take.
