April is effectively over. Nearly May and it's already starting to get cold. I hate winter.

Will it help you any to know it's also starting to get cold here? We've had our first snow of the year this week! In April!

We northern-hemispherites (is that even a word?) have just had a resentful winter that's not wanted to let its grubby claws go of our seasons.
(We had crazy, erratic April snows on this continent too!)

But it's on the way out.
(At least that's what I tell myself?)
Like Av, I'm always saddened when winter is starting to come to my place.

No - I'm a winter creature. I like nothing better than the cold bright days of mid-winter. Winter is better for your health [always given that you keep warm], more conducive to excercise and work and altogether cleaner as a season. It's no coincidence that the nordic countries produce the healthiest, most capable and clear thinking peoples of the world [ ;) tad of 'toung in cheek' there].

Summer just saps the life out of you, spring is beautiful - but a bit to 'pretty' for my taste. Give me a russet autumn or a bright winter [or even an angry one] any day!

Pffft. That's because all they do is huddle in the warmth for 8 months of the year thinking desperately how they can make next winter more bearable.

Late spring is nice. Early autumn is nice. Winter though...winter is cold and dark and bitter.

Even in SA Av? We always imagine your winters to be like our summers.

You might think so, but to me they're as cold and dark as yours to you. :D

In mid winter the sun only rises at 07h00, and sets at 17h30. And of course, we're set up to deal with the heat, not the cold. No central heating or radiators or double glazing here. :D

On my latitude, the sun remains visible for five hours in December. Coldest day was -28C this year.
Anything that doesn't at least match these conditions isn't "cold" or "winterdark". :P :P

In my [granted limited] experience I found it best to restrict all movement to raising and lowering an ice-cold glass of g&t.

To explain what it's like to be ...not quite be depressed per se, but to have Sorrow as a regular companion in ones life, someone at my church recently used this description:
"It's like one long, dark Scandinavian winter."
Just thought I'd volunteer that.

that reminds me... I need to get out that children's book where the girl - and her faithful white cat - sneak past terrifying trolls to free the sun.
I have no idea what the title is, unfortunately.

Hmmm, that reminds me of pet peeve of mine...
Off to that thread!

Hahaha, good call. Similarly, if I found myself in some frozen hellhole I would spend my visit huddled round the fire or radiator or whatever. :D

Is this where we whine about the weather? Cool. 8) Since I got back from Ireland, it's been chilly and overcast nearly every day. It's like we're having April in May. To make matters worse, the building managers switched the HVAC system over to A/C while I was gone -- so it's not only cold outside, it's cold at home, too.

Another good call British Pete :D

Are we talking about the weather? :D Ok then. Well, it's a bit winterish we I am - mainly because of the latitude. It gets dark so early and cooling down dramatically - it's an unpleasant time of year. But putting things in perspective, the temperatures are hitting between 15 and 25 C - is that bad?? Maybe - but to the rest of Australia, it's bloody freezing.

Weather the watch eh :P

'Bout the same here, but max temps haven't gone below 19 yet. Min temps are dropping into single digits though, and it's totally dark by 18h00.
