Les Mysteries de Paris

Post by peter »

This serialised novel by Eugene Sue is a renowned classic having been credited for being amongst others, the inspiration behind Les Miserables, Hugo's classic novel of 19C. Paris. I'm going to spring for a copy ($30 ish) and I'd like any feedback you guys can make in respect of translations etc. Has anyone read it, or picked up on any info that might be pertinent.

What we need is Av on the job (8000 words per minute and rising at the last count!) 😂

Did you learn that Av or does it just come naturally?

Just developed naturally through practice. The more I read, the faster I got.

The first time I ever tested it, I was 15 and doing around 700 WPM. Just got faster over time.

Didn't work like that for me alas; I'm not slow, but not in your league! :)

I sometimes wonder if the aphantasia plays a part too...I don't take any extra time to create mental "movies" of what I'm reading.

That's a strange thing for me to contemplate Av. Our reading experience must be a totally different thing; mine is awash with images ......yours is completely narrative based, and yet we can still take equal pleasure from it in our own separate ways. Surprising in some way that much of what you read seems to be 'image rich' (eg the Chrons of course) in content rather than dialogue based (I could be totally wrong there, but I'm thinking of Sharpe et al).

Hmmm, for me, the fact that the books are rich in imagery is important...the more descriptive it is, the better I know what it looks like.
