Help: I can't post pasted messages.

Post by Shuram Gudatetris »

One of my favorite things to do on the Watch is participate in the Bad Writing Contest. I usually work on these stories using some medium other than the Kevin's Watch posting utility. I work on my story in Word or whatever and copy and paste it to here.

But the last few times I tried doing this, the posting software refused to accept my message. I can paste a "small amount" of something, like a couple sentences, but anything more gives me an error message.

What's up with that?

If this is what I think it is, and I think it is, then see The "406 Not Acceptable" Thread

It's all Vain's fault.

I actually managed to get error trying to post the word "coa-lesce."
Not Acceptable*

An appropriate representation of the requested resource /phpBB2/posting.php could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Not exactly a 406, though..

So don't try to write posts that have the word "coelesce" (spelled correctly) in them?
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor

"In spite of much that militates against quietness there are people who still read books. They are the people who keep me going."

I can't post it either. That is utterly bizarre.

The only thing I can think of is coa-not-more is the name of a PHP function, and the same security thugs that prohibit extended ASCII might be prohibiting function names as a means of preventing hacking.

They can't just go around banning words! How long did it take you to figure out which word was the problem, Linna? I hope it was in a Mallory's context rather than a lengthy post.

Searching the web, I can see that this problem seems to be related to the same security "mod" that prohibits extended ASCII. But I am not really understanding why. I don't it's a ban on words... it's either a bug, or prevention of an injection attack in some way.
