Coral reefs, already under threat from overfishing and global warming, face a new scourge in the form of plastic waste reports The Guardian. An international team of researchers examined 125,000 corals spread across 119 reefs in the Asian Pacific region. They found that that 89 percent with pieces of plastic attached were diseased compared with only 4 percent that were plastic free. It's thought that the fragments act as vessels for harmful microorganisms that ate transferred into the coral as the plastic becomes embedded - a process akin to cutting yourself with a really dirty knife said Cornell University research fellow Joleah Lamb who led the research. Larger items such as bags and wrapping may also contribute by blocking out sunlight and starving the coral of oxygen. There are, estimate the researchers, around 11 billion pieces of embedded plastic across the Asian Pacific's coral reefs.
The truth is a Lion and does not need protection. Once free it will look after itself.
