Open Directories. Thoughts?

Post by High Lord Tolkien »

So I may or may not  be familiar with torrents but I recently discovered "open directories"

For anyone not familiar with what that is it's:
Open directories are simple file directories on the Internet that are not password protected and can contain any type of file. They include Movies, TV shows, Music, Comic Books, or ebooks.

How do open directories get to be on the Internet? They come into existence in many ways but some include, misconfiguration of apache or network attached storage (NAS), or perhaps someone just wants to share what they have.

Here's an example for the Mandalorian

s6.expressdl.xyz/series/the-mandalorian/s01/

Right click, "save as" and done.
In this example you can go up to a higher directory and see more stuff too.

This is not torrenting and so far as I've heard no one has gotten fined or in trouble for sharing or downloading from a share.
I'm not arguing that it's legal but....

There is s Reddit dedicated to opendirectories:
https://www.reddit.com/r/opendirectories/

Usually the owner notices the bandwidth increase, discovers that the directory is lacking a password and the open directory "dies".
So it's also a little exciting knowing that access to the data might be removed at anytime.

To me it's like treasure hunting.
I've found lots of interesting stuff.
Christmas music, movie sounds, Hallmark movies.....

Anyone into Old Time Radio shows?:

This is just napster in another form. I would not do it. The whole reason we have torrents is that anyone who cares to can see who is downloading from a share. Usually they wait until you dig yourself a deep hole with a hundred downloads, then they nail you. I recommend staying away from these.

I concur--open files from the Internet are simply too risky. Don't do it.

Haha, I remember back in the old days manually testing directory structures. :D

As for the privacy issues, I like these guys:
