I've never changed my Avatar yet and oddly, sometimes I find it disconcerting when people I've come to 'know' in this place do! 
I think it was Wayfriend who first delivered the body blow of an Avatar change to my fragile sensibility; I spent much of my early time here on the Chrons pages where his erudition and encyclopedic knowledge of the works was often on display. I'd come to place some, almost one could say 'charachter' to the words he wrote, by virtue of the image that sat beside them, and then all of a sudden - BANG! - it was different. I soon realized that the person behind was still the same, and that the tacking on of a slant to the post by virtue of the avatar that sat along side it was silly - but still it's difficult not to. Cail's avatar, for example, said much about the man behind the mask: his posts would not have sat well aside images of kittens or unicorns. By and large however it's best not to draw too much inference from the avatar people choose. I don't change mine for example, a) because I'm too lazy and b) because I like people to know at a glance that I've posted (they can then read or avoid as they see fit
).
When I see the faces behind the avatars on occasion if I take a dip into the photo threads, I'm usually shocked at how well.......... normal you all look!

Looks like I've never read, voted, nor commented in this thread, until now.
Before my own laptop suffered the Blue Screen of Death, I enjoyed making avatars with the version of Photoshop I had on it. I no longer own a copy of Photoshop, and the free photo editors I do use are not nearly as good, so I pretty much stick to my Gravin Threndor avatar. I'll return to that after my Beddian birthday year is over.
I did make a few avatars for others back in the day, but am unsure if any of them still frequent the Watch, much less still use them if so.
